Driving the Family Germ-mobile

“If you’re a soccer mom, you’re essentially driving a germ-mobile.” Or so claims a microbiologist from the University of Arizona who conducted a study on bacteria levels in people’s vehicles. The conclusion: Most of us are driving around in motorized toilets. Scratch that. Actually, what this germ expert concluded was that in most cases the toilets in our homes are cleaner than the interior of our vehicles. Food for thought the next time you consider loading up the kids for a ride to grandma’s house. Before you start bleaching your dashboard take a look at the details of the study: … Continue reading

Out On A Limp

During two of our daily walks, I noticed that Mister Moose has developed a bit of a limp. It’s odd — he’s fine for the beginning of the walk, but after a few minutes (usually a block or so of walking) he starts to gimp. It looks like one of his back legs is the culprit, which doesn’t surprise me. When Moose had his car accident earlier this year, the veterinarian pointed out that my poor boy has the beginnings of hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is a degenerative joint disease in dogs; an abnormality in the hip joint means that … Continue reading

Murphy’s Gatlinburg Getaway Part II: The Smoky Mountain Dog House and Patriot Park

The hotel and Doggywood was the focus of Part I. Part II covers the rest of Murph’s big vacation adventures. The Smoky Mountain Dog House It poured the morning we planned to take Murphy for a hike on one of the only two trails that allowed dogs in the Smoky Mountain National Park. So we decided to do some shopping instead in a place Murph was welcome too: the Smoky Mountain Dog House. (Someplace I found while I was planning our Smoky Mountain getaway.) Me and Murph in front of their big sign. Another sign in front of the store … Continue reading

When They Know Something’s Up

I like to think that I’m smarter than my dogs are. Sometimes, I’m not so sure. We’re gearing up for a cross-country move — Monday May 7th, Moose and Lally and I will be hitting the road in New Jersey and landing in Oregon by Friday. Even though they haven’t packed any boxes, they know something is going on. The signs may (or may not) be subtle. The house is messier than usual as I organize, sort, pack, and get rid of stuff. But the basic routine is still the same. The alarm goes off at 8 am and we … Continue reading

Skunked! A Real-Life Account

After reading Aimee’s blog, “Dealing with a Skunk Attack,” I couldn’t help but remember one fateful family camping trip. I’ll share the story so you can laugh, see the wrong way to deal with a skunk attack, and then even better appreciate the wisdom in Aimee’s blog…. Wayne, Budly, and I had all just moved from Tucson to Phoenix in that summer of 1993. Growing up, both Wayne’s family and mine camped. We had fond memories of those trips, so, now that we were both out of school and had free weekends once again, we decided to buy a tent, … Continue reading
