Hawaiian Location for Fourth “Pirates” Film

My second and final Hawaii week installment has Disney promising a swashbuckling adventure in Hawaii’s tropical paradise. Executives at Disney have announced that the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie will be filmed in Hawaii. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will begin filming this summer on Oahu and Kauai. It’s slated for release in 2011, likely in the summer. Few details are known yet for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” The movie is a confirmed adaptation, in places, of the 1988 historical fantasy novel “On Stranger Tides” by Tim Powers. The main plot point in the … Continue reading

Hot Hawaiian Travel Deals: Luaus and Love

It’s been a while, but it appears the traditional Hawaiian luau is headed back to Waikiki Beach. The Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa located near downtown Honolulu on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu recently announced that it is resurrecting the traditional local feast on the shores of the world’s most famous beach. The “Waikiki Lu’au on the Lagoon” is being offered twice weekly, on Sundays and Wednesdays. It includes a lei greeting, traditional luau meal and a Polynesian entertainment extravaganza. Beginning just before sunset guests will be greeted with live Hawaiian music and a flower lei on the … Continue reading

Cruising the Hawaiian Islands on a Dime

Okay, maybe not a single dime, but the following cruise deals are almost too hard to pass up. It’s one thing to visit the pearls of the Pacific by air but it’s an entirely different experience when you get to see the “Aloha State” from the sea. The following deals being offered by reputable cruise companies include discounts of up to 56% off. Which makes taking in the islands’ natural wonders much easier on your wallet. Take a look: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America is a staple in the state and right now Orbitz is offering an incredible early-bird … Continue reading

Hawaii: Dolphin Watching

I’ve written my share of blogs on whale watching adventures in paradise, but if you are traveling to Hawaii you should know that the massive mammals are not the only ones worth cruising the Pacific to watch frolic among the waves. A company based on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu offers daily (except Mondays) dolphin watch and lunch cruises. Star of Honolulu Cruises & Events runs the Hoku Naia — a 65-foot, 149-passenger twin-hull catamaran — specifically for its two-hour Wild Dolphin Watch & Lunch Cruises. The catamaran is also equipped with a dining area, bar, restroom, barbecue facility, a … Continue reading

May Day Is Lei Day In Hawaii

Take a trip to Hawaii and you will likely be greeted with a traditional flower lei (a garland of flowers worn around the neck) and a kiss on the cheek. (Remember when the “Brady Bunch” clan visited Hawaii and Greg got lei’d?) Take a trip to Hawaii on May 1st and you (and your fellow travel mates) won’t be the only ones donning the fragrant necklaces. May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii. If you happen to be in the state on May 1st, you’ll know it. Each May Day nearly the entire population of Hawaii gets decked out in … Continue reading

The History of Huskies

The Siberian husky was bred by the Chukchi people of northeastern Asia to be an endurance sled dog. The Chukchi were semi-nomadic people who traveled to hunt; when changing climate forced them to expand their hunting grounds, they developed the huskies to help them survive. Huskies can travel long distances in low temperatures at a moderate speed; they can pull a light load with only a modest energy expenditure. In 1909, the Siberian husky made its first appearance in North America at the All Alaska Sweepstakes Race, prompting a massive import of the breed. A year later, John “Iron Man” … Continue reading

Flying Between The Hawaiian Islands—Right Now Cheaper Than Dinner For Two

People who travel between the Hawaiian Islands are pinching themselves right now. Is it a dream? Are they hallucinating? Or, is it really true? Airfares for $19? Unbelievable! Unheard of! (Keep in mind one-way fares between the islands average $82.50.) But, the news is true and travelers in the 50th state are ecstatic. The only catch… you need to act fast. The offer is only good for a limited time. So what is fueling this plummet in prices? The introduction of Mesa Air Group’s go! Airlines. (For more info on Mesa and the history of outrageous inter-island airfares read my … Continue reading

Cruising The Hawaiian Islands—For Free!

Recently, I wrote a blog about one of Hawaii’s most popular family friendly attractions—Sea Life Park. The park is really a world-class marine attraction located just 15 miles from Waikiki on Oahu’s scenic Makapuu Point. A few days after the blog posted I received an email informing me of an incredible contest the park is running in conjunction with Norwegian Cruise Line America. It’s your chance to win a free cruise around the Hawaiian Islands! That’s right… you and a loved one could be kicking back on board the Pride of Hawaii. Actually, the cruise line is giving away four … Continue reading

Insurance Podcast Roundup – Week of August 30, 2011

Insurance can be confusing, and complicated, at times. You might find things easier to comprehend if you listen to someone explain it on a podcast, than if you tried to sit down and read some articles about insurance topics. The weekly Insurance Podcast Roundup can help you make sense of things. NPR has an episode of Morning Edition that was released on August 29, 2011. This episode talks about the new poll done by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The poll shows that about half of Americans who do not have any form of health insurance do not have a good … Continue reading
