For the Strength of Youth Series: Friends

Growing up, I always had good friends. In my first high school, I chose a quiet group of LDS kids to hang around with and I always felt like my standards were respected. I don’t think they were ever challenged. My second high school was also like this. I quickly found friends in seminary and at church, and these friends were instrumental in helping me gain confidence and self-understanding in a turbulent time. In fact, it wasn’t until the end of my undergraduate degree while studying in England that I became close friends with people of other faiths. Call me … Continue reading

Snack Habits in My Pack

It seems that there are two types of dog: the dog who will eat anything in front of him, whenever it is available (like my dog Moose) and the dog who only eats when she’s hungry (like my dog Lally). When it comes to snacks, Moose and Lally are also very different. Moose will try anything once. Twice. Seventeen times. Lally is a much pickier eater. She only likes certain things and will disdain anything that isn’t on her list. Her likes include chicken jerky, chicken or beef flavored chewy treats, and the occasional rawhide (but only when she’s in … Continue reading

My Pets Are Not Disposable

I love my pets. I value my pets. I think of them as members of the family. When they are sick or injured, I do what I can to ease their pain and help them get better — whether that means a trip to the vet or administering medication or adjusting our daily routine. They are my best friends and constant companions. I realize that everyone doesn’t feel the same way about their pets. But it bothers me — a lot — that there are people out there who treat their pets like they are disposable. Planning a move? Too … Continue reading

A Tribute To My Best Friends

I didn’t realize today was Best Friends Day until I read Courtney’s blog — thanks, Court! What a great holiday. I’ll be calling my two-legged best friends later today, but for right now, I want to focus on my four-legged best friends. As I write this, I have a dog on either side of me. Moose is smashed up against my side and looking up hopefully for a belly rub. Lally isn’t in physical contact, but every so often she lifts her head to check on me. When I’m in the office, she crams herself into the space between my … Continue reading

A Tribute To An Island Legend

In a previous blog I shared my memories of legendary Hawaiian entertainer Don Ho. The iconic singer died from heart failure on April 14th. According to news reports, in the days and weeks since his death, cards and flowers have poured into his family’s home and to the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel, Ho’s venue from 1994 until his death. In addition, those who knew Ho best have been feverishly organizing a memorial befitting of the entertainer’s legendary status. If you are a fan of the late Don Ho you may consider heading to Hawaii this weekend (yes, I know, if it … Continue reading

Pets Are Wonderful Month: My Tribute to Murphy, Mr. Meow, and Tabby

Did you know in addition to being Animal Cruelty Prevention Month it’s also Pets Are Wonderful Month? I already covered a couple reasons why I think my pets are wonderful in Bless the Pets Who Forgive Us Our Trespasses, but here’s some others specific to each of them: Why Murphy’s Wonderful • Because he’s so easy going and tolerant. • Because he’s one heck of a good listener. I can grumble to him or sing to him (my singing is horrible, maybe even worse than my grumbling), and he just sits there wagging his tail. • Because he’s so gentle … Continue reading

Freezer Cooking: What I Love Best (2)

As I explained in the other article, there are many different reasons that I love freezer cooking, but there are a few reasons that I really love it and a few ways it has changed me and my family. I already explained a few, but here are a few more. Open Door Policy The other thing I really love about freezer cooking, is that if you have a last minute dinner guest, or you wish to have friends stay for dinner, you have meals all ready to go. Just grab them from the freezer and prepare as directed. You always … Continue reading

My Thoughts on Development and Maintenance of Marriage

This blog was inspired by a question posed from a poster on Families.com’s forum. Bryan was the first guy I didn’t feel like I had to impress. Prior to meeting him I’d come to the realization that at 16 I didn’t need a boyfriend—though one would be nice if he were willing to accept me for who I was. Even at just 16 I’d come to realize what I wanted and needed out of a relationship was not going to come easy at my age. Bryan really wasn’t looking for a relationship at the time either. So when we met, … Continue reading

My Sergei – Ekaterina Gordeeva

Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov were the pair skaters to beat in the late 1980’s and the 1990’s. They came from Russia and had been skating together for years, placed together by chance in the beginning but falling in love the more they came to know each other. Theirs was a love story unequaled in the world of sports. Watching them skate together was like watching two people realizing they’re in love for the first time – every look, every touch as gentle and sweet as could be. Their technique was flawless, their execution perfect, their love pure and beautiful. … Continue reading
