Living with a Cat with FIV

FIV stands for feline immunodeficiency virus — it is a virus related to feline leukemia (FeLV) and HIV in humans that can impair a cat’s ability to fight off infections. Once, a diagnosis of FIV was considered a death sentence. These days, cats with FIV can live long and happy lives. Many FIV positive cats live a decade or more with the disease! Here are some tips to help you if your share your home with a cat who is FIV positive. Take care that your FIV positive cat does not spread the disease to others. The best way to … Continue reading

Shelter Discrimination

A blog I wrote about adopting black cats (and dogs) has gotten some attention from shelters. I’ve had several people contact me, looking for permission to adapt the list for their black shelter residents. You might be surprised to learn that black dogs and cats tend to linger the longest in shelters — longer than older animals, abused animals, or even injured animals. The problem is common enough (especially in large black dogs) that it has a name: black dog syndrome. What makes animals with black coats harder to adopt out? Perhaps the dark color of their coat makes them … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Feral Cat Efforts

At the cats only boarding facility, they welcome cats of all shapes and sizes. We get some “mostly outdoor” cats whose owners bring them in to stay when the weather is bad. We get some pampered princes and princesses who require daily brushing and like to eat from fancy dishes. I know for sure that my coworkers are cat lovers. But more than that — they really care about the welfare of cats. All cats. Even the feral ones. Every day, we take all the leftover cat food and empty it into a big dish. After each shift, somebody brings … Continue reading

The Ugly Kitty

A crafty friend of mine asked if I’d heard of The Ugly Kitty. I hadn’t, but with a name like that I had to track this shop down. I sat down (virtually) with Renee and asked her about her business, her pets, and her favorite causes. Aimee: Let’s start with the pets in your family. Renee: Keiko (aka NormalKitty) is a sweet but whiny short-haired charcoal kitty my friends found as a stray. She’s been part of our family for about 3 years. Quasi (aka UglyKitty) is the star of the show. Due to a cleft pallet, she has a … Continue reading

Mackie’s Tale

Today is National Homeless Animals Day, which was instituted by the International Society for Animal Rights. The ISAR will celebrate today with many organized candle vigils, but I’m going to do something a little different. For your enjoyment, here’s a short story I wrote based on a true story –that of my real life dog Mackie. Buster Beginnings I started life as Buster. The early weeks are fuzzy, but I’ve heard tell I came from a litter of five pups. When we turned two months old, we were sold to different homes. My First Home: The Millers My first family … Continue reading

The Dog Days of Summer: Why Dogs Take the Heat for the Heat

At the start of every month I consult lists scattered across the web to compile what I call my daily/weekly/monthly celebrations list. (Now you know why I’ve been writing about things like American Eagle Day, Adopt-a-Shelter Cat Month, and National Dog Bite Prevention Week.) Well, today starts what’s known as the Dog Days of Summer. Ever heard that expression? Ever wonder how it came to be called that? Me too. So I did a little more web-surfing to come up with the following: • The Dog Days of Summer refer to the warmest days of the season –and the “season” … Continue reading

The Great Cat Rehabilitation Project: Even Further Progress!

Yesterday, I wrote in the Week in Review blog that June’s going to be all about cats, cats, cats. Partially because Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month started June 1, but also because since Friday I’ve had nothing but cats on the brain, thanks to Tabby and Mr. Meow. It all started about two weeks ago, when they made huge strides tolerating each other again, like they had done in the very beginning. I dared to hope that my positive reinforcement approach was working. By the end of May, The Great Cat Rehabilitation Project was nearly complete. All I needed to see Mr. … Continue reading

Adopt-a-Shelter Cat Month Starts Today: How to Participate

June is known in some circles as Adopt-a-Shelter Cat Month, which was started by American Humane. I suspected June was probably selected because right about now shelters are overflowing with kittens. (I based this assumption on my personal experiences with Tabby –first finding her and then finding out she was pregnant.) I was right. Out of the millions of cats who enter shelters each year, only about one in four are adopted into loving homes. In fact, most of them –more than 70 percent of them– must be euthanized. ~Statement from American Humane Yikes! That statistic breaks my heart. (I … Continue reading
