Adventures of the Brown Ninja

I forget how sneaky and quick my dog Moose can be. Most of the time, he's a slow-moving object. (He isn't nicknamed "Speed Bumpy" for nothing!) But the other morning he pulled a fast one on me, earning a new nickname: the Brown Ninja.

Moose always eats his breakfast the second the bowl hits the floor. I don't have to worry about him starving! My other dog, on the other hand, is a very picky eater. If she doesn't eat her meal within the first five minutes or so, I have to pick up the bowl or Moose will eat a second breakfast.

I had just gotten back from work at the cats-only boarding facility, and fixed breakfast for the dogs. Moose ate his; Lally turned up her nose at hers. When my phone rang, I decided to stay in the kitchen to chat and leave Lally's bowl down in the hopes that she'd change her mind and eat.

As I talked, I got a little distracted, but tried to keep my eye on the bowl.

Still, Moose got the best of me! The next thing I knew, he was licking the empty bowl. He'd eaten Lally's breakfast right in front of me, and I hadn't noticed. Thus he became the Brown Ninja.

I shouldn't be surprised -- he used to move fast when the backyard gate was open. If it was cracked even an inch, he'd turn into butter and squeeze through. He'd be gone fast enough that I often had trouble catching up to him. I thought his quick and sneaky days were behind us, but every once in a while, he still surprises me!

Lally is the kind of dog who only eats when she's hungry -- so I'm not too worried about her starving. The vet says her weight is just about perfect. (Moose, on the other hand, could stand to miss a few meals -- his own or Lally's!)
