Interview with My Fellow Pets Blogger and Mystery Author Courtney Mroch

Recently, Courtney and I decided it would be fun to interview each other. After all, we’re both writers and pet lovers. So read on, and learn something you maybe didn’t know about my awesome blogging partner, Courtney Mroch! Aimee: What kind of things do you write about? (Genre, subject matter, themes, what have you.) Courtney: I’m not prejudiced to any form of writing except maybe poetry (and that’s only ’cause I suck at it) so I pretty much write everything. Essays, short stories, novels, articles… Whatever notion my muse strikes me with, I run with it. As far as genre … Continue reading

Aimee’s Cast of Characters, part one

I’m one of your new pets bloggers… but you’re not here to read about me, are you? NO! You’re here to read about my mutts! We’ve had lots of dogs in the family over the years — and you’ll get to meet all of them soon enough — but there have been three dogs who have been Mine. Miko… joined the family 4/25/2000 After graduating college in 1999, I lived in an apartment for a year. After that, I moved home to live with my grandmother. As soon as my stuff was home, I went to Jersey Shore Animal Center … Continue reading

Pets Bring People Together

Way back when I first started writing for the Families.com Pets Blog, I wrote about how my father and I don’t always see eye to eye. If there’s only one thing we agree on, it’s our love for our four-legged family members. On the rare occasions that we chat on the phone, the main topic of conversation is the pups. How are my dogs, Moose and Lally? How are the dogs back in New Jersey? Who’s been to the vet, who’s got a new bad habit, what was the last three-dog walk like? (My parents have one dog and my … Continue reading

Homecoming: Becca, Lily, and Kuma

It’s been quiet on the Pets Blog for the last few days because I took my first trip back to the East Coast in more than a year. I moved west with my two dogs in May 2007 — I managed to get home to visit twice in that first year, but hadn’t been home again since January 2008. I was a little worried that it had been too long, and the furry family members back in New Jersey wouldn’t remember me. It’s not like I can chat with them on the phone too often (some pets will sit and … Continue reading

Most Popular Pet Names of 2008

Around the end of the year (or the start of a new year), it’s not unusual to see lists appear. Popular names for boys and girls are always a favorite… but did you see the lists of popular names for pets? The ten most popular names for dogs and cats were collected by VPI — Veterinary Pet Insurance. The company insures more than four hundred thousand pets around the United States, and scoured their database to find the most popular names for pets in the past year. (Since they only looked at their clients, the lists might be a bit … Continue reading

A Dog’s Social Life (or Lack Thereof)

I read an article recently in Prevention magazine about how dogs need friends. Not just human friends, but dog friends, too! You may have seen it before: your dog has a special canine buddy. They get SO excited to see them! They act differently (in a good way) around them. Looking at my dogs, I’m hard-pressed to think of really good dog friends they’ve had. For Lally, I think the last dog she really loved was an ex-boyfriend’s terrier mix named Jester. Jester (AKA “Pest”) was the dog who showed Lally how to fetch: after watching him do it, she … Continue reading

Love Is A Fat Lip and A Black Eye

It was like a winning clip from America’s Funniest Home Videos: a friend of mine came to visit and Lally ran up to say hello. Unfortunately, she tends to say hello by jumping up and boxing the people who come to the door — she is half boxer, after all. As it happens, she happened to tag him in a very sensitive area, if you get my drift. He doubled over in pain; I doubled over in laughter. I’ve had my share of accidental greeting injuries. Lally’s boxing has left me with scratches up and down my arms and legs … Continue reading

Miko’s Personality Flaw

Four years ago today, my dog Miko passed away peacefully in his sleep. I’ve mentioned him here before — his adventures at the dog park, how he picked me out at the shelter, and our last days together. He was a great dog, full of personality and so very smart. He dazzled the family with tricks from the first night he was home. But if he had one flaw, it was in his digestive tract. When Miko was nervous… man that dog could pass gas! We first noticed it in his first few months with us. Miko could clear a … Continue reading

Car Rides: Love Them Or Hate Them?

In the Amodio family, we LOVE car rides. That doesn’t just go for my Moose and Lally — my parents’ dog Becca and my brother’s dogs Kuma and Lily Biscuits love going for a ride. Becca was the first dog in the family (after a long pet absence thanks to allergies). We used to sing her a “Bye Bye Song” that my mother made up when it was time to go for a ride. Becca would get so excited; she would bring us her favorite toy and dance around in circles. She always insisted on riding in the front seat … Continue reading
