An Unusual Mother for Bobcats

You’d think with all the stories that periodically break, we wouldn’t be so surprised and fascinated when we hear about animals caring for the young of a different species. Yet it seems we can never get enough of such stories (at least I know I can’t), and it always comes as a bit of a shock to see a gorilla, for instance, cradling a kitten. This time around, the odd couple’s at least sort of from the same species. In South Carolina, a domesticated house cat is nursing a litter of baby bobcats. MSNBC reports that the baby bobcats were … Continue reading

Woman Attacks Bear to Save Dog

Bears are moving into cities I first saw this MSNBC story on Facebook where a friend of mine, also a dachshund owner like the woman in the article, linked to it and said she would have done the same thing. What’s the headline? “Alaska Woman Punches Bear in Face to Save her Tiny Dog.” Brooke Collins is 22 years old and lives in Juneau, Alaska. Her wildlife encounter didn’t occur when she was out camping or hiking in the wilderness, but rather in her own urban neighborhood. The Alaskan capital often sees bears prowling its streets for food, but they’ve … Continue reading

The Best Animals on the Internet

I thought I would use today’s blog to have some lighthearted fun to send us into the long weekend. I’m highlighting my favorite animal videos and stories that I’ve found around the web. They’re not long enough to warrant entire posts like the times I’ve talked about dog and capybara best friends or countries-crossing cats, but altogether they’ll make for an amusing way to start off the weekend early. The first video I want to share—my absolute favorite animal video online—features two adorable otters. They might be good friends or maybe they’re sweethearts, but they spend the majority of the … Continue reading

A Really Odd Couple: Dog and Capybara

I’m afraid you’re going to get a number of these stories here on the pets blog, every time I find one. At least I did sit on this story for a while, waiting until more time had passed until the last time I talked about an unlikely animal friendship. Human interest news website tonic.com has the tale of the recently developed friendship between a domesticated dog and a capybara. For those who don’t know, the capybara is the world’s largest rodent. It’s native to South America, particularly the wetter/more tropical eastern half. Charlie the capybara bonded with Pacho, a shepherd … Continue reading

Feline Hydrotherapy

I’ve been a fan of debunking commonly-held feline myths, but today I’ve got a story that actually adheres to two well-known cat proverbs: curiosity killed the cat, and cats have nine lives. The two often go hand-in-hand, as it’s a cat’s never-ending curiosity that usually gets it into situations it narrowly escapes. Now the New York Post has an article about a cat in the Big Apple who worked at saving one of its lives by fighting another cat myth: that cats hate water. Nazzaning, a six-year-old Turkish Van, found herself partially paralyzed by a spinal cord injury. Her owner … Continue reading

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Aids Orphan Gorillas

Anytime news breaks about Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you’ll see it here. I’m a total animal lover and so I keep a close watch on happenings at what just might be my favorite park at Disney World. I know I can’t really say it’s my favorite part of Disney World given that I’ve never been there, and it’s strange to consider that it might be something having nothing to do with fairy tales or fantasy, but I read about stories like this and I can’t help but love what I hear about the Animal Kingdom. At the beginning of June senior … Continue reading

Rare Pets: Hedgehogs

I’m aware that most of my posts on the Pets blog relate to cats or dogs. They’re the most common pets in America, and also the two pets I own, so the majority of my articles focus on them. I thought I’d change things up a bit, however, with a new recurring column on rare pets. Today I take a look at the hedgehog. Hedgehogs have fascinated me from an early age, ever since my childhood introduction to Sonic the Hedgehog, a video game and cartoon character. Real hedgehogs, however, don’t look anything like Sonic, with his spiky blue ‘do … Continue reading
