Recent Pets Blog | February 2009 PostsWhat Would You Say to Your Pets?by Aimee Amodio27 Feb 2009 08:53 AMI read an article in the January/February issue of BARK magazine that had me in tears. It was called Beyond Words: the light and the dark side of a relationship without speech. Skin and Coat Care for Senior Petsby Aimee Amodio26 Feb 2009 08:49 AMDid you know that the skin is the heaviest organ in your pet's body? It can account for an average sixteen percent of your pet's total weight! What does the skin do? Pets Can Have Senior Moments, Too!by Aimee Amodio25 Feb 2009 08:45 AMSenior pets -- generally, that means pets over the age of seven, but it varies depending on species, breed, and size -- can suffer from a lot of the same problems senior humans do. That includes the dreaded, embarrassing, or frustrating "senior moment". Grooming: Drying Your Petby Aimee Amodio24 Feb 2009 01:45 PMMy dog Moose is in need of a bath. He's the kind of dog who needs a bath every few months to keep dander down and coat grease-free. He's generally good in the bath; I'm not worried about the bath itself. What I'm worried about is the aftermath: drying off. Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Pictures and Report Cardsby Aimee Amodio20 Feb 2009 01:30 PMToday was a frustertaining day at the cats-only boarding facility. Frustertaining = entertaining and frustrating at the same time. Why? Because I was working on report cards. We try to write up a little report card for every guest who stays with us. Pets Behaving Badly: Destructive Tendenciesby Aimee Amodio17 Feb 2009 01:02 PMEvery once in a while, your pet does something so bad -- so outrageous -- that you just have to laugh. (Maybe after you're done cleaning up!) I like to tell a story from Moose's early days with me. Pets Behaving Badly: Foodby Aimee Amodio16 Feb 2009 01:01 PMWhat's the most outrageous thing your pet has done? That's the question I posed to one of my online pet communities. Weekly Pet Health Checklistby Aimee Amodio14 Feb 2009 12:54 PMWe spend a lot of time with our pets -- after all, we share the same living space! But frequent contact can make it easy to miss subtle changes in health or behavior. This weekly health checklist can help you keep on top of your pet's well being. Treats for Pets with Dietary Restrictionsby Aimee Amodio13 Feb 2009 12:53 PMWhen it comes to food, my two dogs are very different. Lally is the sort of dog who will only eat when she's hungry; I could leave a bowl of food out all day and she'd regulate herself. Moose is a chow hound; he'll eat until there's nothing left and then eat some more. Should You Vaccinate Your Own Pets?by Aimee Amodio12 Feb 2009 01:56 PMAre you a do-it-yourself sort of person? Veterinarians are often asked if owners can administer vaccinations at home. But this is usually not a good idea. Why Vaccinations May Failby Aimee Amodio11 Feb 2009 01:56 PMI'm a big fan of vaccinating pets. Immunization has successfully prevented disease in millions of pets for years. But once in a while, a vaccine doesn't work for a particular animal. Vaccine failure is pretty rare, but it can happen. An Impractical Solution for Separation Anxietyby Aimee Amodio08 Feb 2009 10:28 AMIf you're a regular reader of the Families.com Pets Blog, you may have noticed that my dog Lally has a bit of a nervous personality. Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Abandoned!by Aimee Amodio07 Feb 2009 11:08 AMI was just thinking the other day how I hadn't had any blog-worthy adventures at work lately. Today I had one! When we showed up for work this morning, I saw a sight I'd been dreading for the past year and more: a cardboard box and a bag of food with a note attached. Moose is Full of Mischief!by Aimee Amodio03 Feb 2009 02:35 PMI guess even dogs can get a wild hair now and then. My dog Moose (a German shepherd mix) has been full of mischief lately! It started a few nights ago. The dogs and I went to bed around ten (our usual bedtime, give or take an hour or so) after one last quick trip outside for piddles. Recent Blog Comments dallasfire says... "We have been helping a friend who started out feeding one stray, feral cat and ended up with over 10 visiting her daily." Aimee Amodio says... "You might want to start with the three suggestions above: 1) Make sure it isn't a physical problem, like a bladder infection. 2) Make sure your dogs are getting plenty of quality time with the humans. 3) Try a pheromone spray -- they can be comforting and calming." |
