What Does Your Pet Do All Day?

Some pets love the camera My engineering husband is a bit of a techie. He’s an odd sort, however, who never asks for any presents. Most gadgets he wants are expensive, so he feels bad putting them on any gift wish lists. Ever since we started dating, I would spend the months before his birthday and Christmas browsing the internet looking for suitable contraptions or other toys he might like. That’s how I discovered website thinkgeek.com, a site devoted to cool geeky toys, technology, t-shirts, books, and more. Given the breadth of Think Geek’s offerings, it was only a matter … Continue reading

Cities Adopt Pet Store Ban

Growing up I was never fond of that common teenage ritual: frequenting the mall. But some of my friends were, so sometimes I would accompany them on the trip. I did enjoy going to a couple stores like the bookstore and our local mall’s pet store. I’ve said many times before how much I wanted a dog growing up, and the cat my parents adopted instead made me love cats as well. By my later teenage years we didn’t have any pets in the house anymore, so I enjoyed going to look at the pets in the pet store. The … Continue reading

Irresponsible Pet Owners

In my last article I mentioned that I can’t watch several shows on Animal Planet because they upset me. Next to Animal Cops, the other shows that I find disturbing are those where dog trainers go to people’s homes to help with their dogs’ behavioral problems. For my second “Be Kind to Animals Week” article, I want to focus on irresponsible pet owners. Irresponsible pet owners are one of my biggest peeves, and the reason why I don’t like dog training shows. Watching those shows it seems like most of the time, the dogs have problems because their owners don’t … Continue reading

Extreme Pets! – Jane Harrington

If you have an animal lover in the family, or if your family is considering a new pet, pick up a copy of Extreme Pets! by Jane Harrington. The book is loaded with marvelous color photographs. The book starts with a pet pact – making sure that the owner knows they are responsible for special feeding, care, safety, potential allergies, and medical care. Extreme Pets! is wire bound, which makes the … Continue reading

Interview with My Fellow Pets Blogger and Mystery Author Courtney Mroch

Recently, Courtney and I decided it would be fun to interview each other. After all, we’re both writers and pet lovers. So read on, and learn something you maybe didn’t know about my awesome blogging partner, Courtney Mroch! Aimee: What kind of things do you write about? (Genre, subject matter, themes, what have you.) Courtney: I’m not prejudiced to any form of writing except maybe poetry (and that’s only ’cause I suck at it) so I pretty much write everything. Essays, short stories, novels, articles… Whatever notion my muse strikes me with, I run with it. As far as genre … Continue reading

Shopping the Catalogs: Pet Lovers Paradise

‘Tis the season when catalogs clutter our mailboxes. Unlike some people who immediately toss them, I shop them. I never know what I might find, and this year I found a ton of cool stuff for pet and animal lovers and owners as well as for pets themselves. I don’t know if it’s because I’m paying more attention this year or if the catalog companies have caught on to our passion for pets. Whatever it is, it does seem like every catalog this year offered a bunch more pet products than ever before. Whether you’re a dog person, cat person, … Continue reading

15 Things My Pets Make Me Thankful For

Happy Thanksgiving! This is my favorite day of the year. As I explained in I Am So Thankful for All of the Animal Lovers Out There, I was given a precious gift back in 1999: Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy. It was that book that introduced me to the power of gratitude and to keeping track of it in a gratitude journal, which was an act that revolutionized my life. I don’t always write in my gratitude journal every day, it’s more like a weekly journal, but today is the one day of the … Continue reading

Amazon’s Bestselling Books – November 2007

Wondering what everyone in America is reading right now? I was a little curious myself and decided to take a look at Amazon’s bestseller list. I was pretty surprised to see how many nonfiction titles were listed amongst the top ten, but I do understand that twice as many nonfiction as fiction books are published per year, so maybe I shouldn’t have been so surprised. Coming in at #1: “You: Staying Young: The Owner’s Manual for Extending Your Warranty” by by Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz. This book was written to help us understand how our bodies age … Continue reading
