The Science of Dogs

Over the weekend I watched the National Geographic documentary “The Science of Dogs.” It explored canine genetics, studying what it is about a dog’s DNA that makes it the species with the greatest number of breeds. The documentary revealed that there is something uniquely malleable about canine DNA that allows it to make a staggering variety of small changes. The example given by the documentary explained that one can breed cows in such a way to get different color patterns or shapes of horns. But all cows will look fundamentally the same and share identical characteristics. As we well know, … Continue reading

Seeing Red on Valentine’s Day

My 6-year-old is counting down the days to her first grade class Valentine’s Day party. She’s dying to pass out the all-red treats she chose for all of her classmates and hand her teacher the all-red Love Day card she made with a very red Sharpie. It’s all about red during the countdown to February 14th. Thank goodness her Catholic School uniform is partially red or I’d really be in for it. You’d think the class party would be enough to satisfy my daughter’s obsession with red, but nooooooo, she wants to paint her entire day red, including her meals. … Continue reading

Learn from Dogs

Those of us who are married can learn a lot from dogs. Dog owners know how faithful loyal and loving these four footed friends can be. Their love and loyalty does not depend on what we do for them. They will love us regardless and not hesitate to show it. In the words of John Grogan from Marley and Me ‘A dog doesn’t care ifyou’re rich or poor, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he’ll give you his. How many people can you say that about/? How many people make you feel special, extraordinary?’ Yet shouldn’t that be … Continue reading

Home Blog Month in Review: August

Did you have a good month? We seem to have packed an entire summer’s worth of activities in this past month. Now, it seems, it is back to school and time to get ready for autumn. Still, it is nice to look back toward warm sands and wearing shorts even as we will soon be crunching leaves and taking out the sweaters. August 1st Getting Out Grass Stains With summer in full swing, chances are that your family has been playing outdoors quite a bit. And with all of that outdoor play comes the grass stains, especially if you are … Continue reading

Can’t Judge an Animal Lover by Their Cover

The other day I was talking with James, a guy Wayne and I met playing volleyball a couple years back who’s since become a good friend. He dates Lyn, my other good friend from volleyball. Lyn actually sparked a series of articles about deaf dogs after she found out her dog was deaf and asked me what I knew about such things. (Which was nothing then but thanks to her I learned a lot!) Anyway, like my mom James’s dad also was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. Between league sand volleyball getting ready to start back up (Lyn, James, Wayne, … Continue reading

Meet Pets Blogger Extraordinaire Aimee Amodio: The Interview

Aimee’s dogs Moose and Lally You know her as Aimee Amodio (or maybe by her Families.com handle NewroticGirl). I know her as my fellow Pets blogger. But just how well do we really know the woman behind the myth? Or just how true an animal loving soul she possesses? We’re about to find out. Aimee had the fun idea of interviewing every author we know, including ourselves, about our pets and how they factor into our writing lives. I thought it was a brilliant idea and hopped right on board to interview this prolific fellow animal-loving blogger who I so … Continue reading

Romantic Hurricane Adventures: Fun with Floyd

For me, September brings to mind hurricanes. It all started the year we moved to Florida. The Summer of ‘99 We moved to Jacksonville in May of 1999. Our move had been a bit rocky. Wayne and I had been separated for four months until our house sold in Phoenix. (Actually, it hadn’t even sold yet. I just couldn’t stand not living with him anymore, so I decided I was moving. Luckily we got an offer at the same time.) But I had only been in Jax a month when Wayne’s company declared bankruptcy and laid him off. It could … Continue reading

Can Animal Planet Scare Your Pet?

Are you the kind of pet parent who leaves Animal Planet on when you’re away from home? I have a lot of pet parent friends who do this. It makes sense. Animal Planet…animals are featured…pets should like this. Right? But what if it scares them? A little while back I watched Bailey, a neighbor’s dog, for a day. It wasn’t an overnight thing; all I had to do was stop over for a couple of pee-break visits and such. So she wouldn’t get too lonely in the interim, her mom left Animal Planet on for her. During my last visit … Continue reading

Celeb Updates: Paris’s Least Favorite Color and Rosie’s Staying Put

Can you guess what it is? That’s right—-prison orange. According to her mother, Paris is “sick of orange.” But other than that Kathy Hilton says her daughter is doing well and is looking forward to being released from jail tomorrow. “I think she’s very, very excited to see the family,” the heiress’ mother told reporters on Saturday. Ma Hilton added that the party-girl was also looking forward to getting out of her orange prison uniform. Another of the socialite’s visitors (actress Ashley Scott of TV’s “Jericho”) told reporters that Paris can’t wait to get out and “eat.” How’s that for … Continue reading

Color Blindness

Most people with color blindness can see some color. People who can see no color at all are actually pretty rare! In a normal eye, there are color-sensitive cells in the retina — the layer of nerves at the back of the eye that convert light into signals sent to the brain. These color-sensitive cells are called cones, and they come in three types: sensitive to red, blue, or green light. In a normal eye, you see color when the cone cells sense any or all of these types of light; cone cells work best in bright light and not … Continue reading
