How Much Does Your Pet Influence Your Lifestyle?

A week or two ago, I saw a story on Today about people who take their pets to work. I didn’t catch the full story, however. I think it was really more about how much pets influence some people’s lives. All aspects of it. Work One of the men profiled in the Today piece explained how he had moved his workplace for his dog. Apparently he runs his own business and leases office space. When a landlord prohibited pets from being in the building, the man went and found more accommodating office space elsewhere. But other people who didn’t own … Continue reading

My Favorite Pet Blogs from the Past Year

Below is a list of my favorite articles I wrote during the past year, often with an explanation of what made them memorable. Five Non-Cash Ways to Help Animals/Shelters this Holiday Season: This was my first article to have a comment left on it. Is It Ever Okay to Kick a Dog?: This was my first article to ever get stars. The BMK Fund: This practice is very near and dear to my heart and it was neat to have a platform such as blogging for Families.com to share it on. How to Put Your Shopping Dollars to Work Helping … Continue reading

Poisonous Spiders

In light of how many spider webs I’ve walked into lately, I thought it might be a good time to familiarize myself with poisonous spiders. There are eight fairly common poisonous spiders in the United States. Most spiders bite when threatened — they don’t tend to run around chomping on people otherwise. Widow spiders are probably the most common kind of poisonous spider in the United States. They are approximately the size of a blueberry, and have the infamous red hourglass shape on their undersides. Body color and hourglass shape vary from one species to another. Widow spider venom is … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for May 14-20

I flew solo again for part of the week until Thursday. Then Aimee came back with, among other things, tales of her adventures with Lally and Moose during their cross country trip to their new home. Here’s what other topics were addressed in the Pets Blog: Monday, May 14 Um, everyone needs one day off, right? Tuesday, May 15 Tabby, Tabby, Tabby. It was all about Tabby. First, an account of how even the best vets goof, then about her “disturbing” new behavior. Wednesday, May 16 I’ve really been into themed days lately, so when I found one about Sea-Monkeys, … Continue reading

DogFriendly.com: Dog-Friendly Vacation Planning Made Easier

This week, May 12-20, is National Tourism Week sponsored by the Travel Industry Association. It’s a good time to have such a week, as summer’s right around the corner and summer vacations are topmost on many people’s minds. I know vacation is on my mind. Wayne and I don’t always get to go on one each year, but I like to have a list of places where Murph would be welcome to come with us if we could get away. (A few times we’ve taken non-Murph vacations and kenneled him, but that can get expensive. Cheaper just to take him … Continue reading

Cape San Blas: The Ultimate Dog Beach Vacation Spot

I love the beach. I love the sound of the ocean lapping against the shore, the squeal of sea gulls, the feel of the sand underfoot, and the smell of the salt air. So does Wayne. We also love watching Murphy explore the dunes, chase sand pipers through the surf, and then run from the waves he’s sure are trying to get him. When we lived in Jacksonville we’d often take him to Mickler’s Landing in Ponte Vedre because dogs were welcome there all the time. (Jacksonville’s beaches have a policy whereby dogs are only allowed on the beach before … Continue reading
