Rabbit Saves Family from Fire

Maybe I’m a little biased for headlines that contain the word “saves” and the name of an animal. Whether it’s one animal saving another, an animal doing so for a human, or humans returning the favor, I’m a sucker for these stories. So if I post too often on the topic let me know in the comments section below, along with suggestions for the types of stories you’d rather see more often. If I don’t hear to the contrary, then I’ll just assume you all love these tales as much as I do. Today I’ve got what’s certainly one of … Continue reading

Cat Survives in Wall for Seven Weeks

I saw the headline on MSN last night and heard the story on the radio this morning: a cat survived inside the bathroom walls for seven weeks. Here’s how it happened: workers were replacing pipes in an apartment building in Stadthagen, Germany. Little black cat Bonny was last seen wandering around a neighbor’s apartment. Bonny’s owner believes that the cat snuck in underneath the bathtub and was sealed in. Owner Monika Hoppert eventually heard the little cat’s meowing from behind the tiles. At first, the woman couldn’t believe it. But eventually she realized it was indeed her missing Bonny — … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Feb 26-Mar 4

It’s concise, quick, and handy. For your Pets Blog pleasure, here’s the breakdown of what Aimee and myself wrote about this past week: Monday, February 26 Pets need to keep warm in cold winter weather, too, and what better way than with a coat made just for them? Aimee interviewed Holly Glover, a dog-lover who turned her talent for sewing into Project Puppy Love, which ultimately warms up the lives of shelter dogs. Speaking of warming … the weather prompted me to take Murph for a walk, which sparked “What Kind of Dog Is That?”: Why I Love My Pound … Continue reading

Cat Saves Family From Fire

Animal heroes are all around us. The news from Australia brings us the story of Timmy the cat who saved his family from a house fire. In the middle of the night, a forgotten cigarette set a mattress on fire in a family home in Cairns, a town in northern Australia. Timmy woke his owners by pawing and clawing at their faces; the family of four was able to escape unharmed. Fire service officials reported that the home had only minor damage thanks to Timmy’s quick action — and that Timmy was the best smoke alarm system the family could … Continue reading

Pet Pardons

Are you a sucker for animal rescue stories? You all know I am. I post them here all of the time. However, I can’t keep up with the constant flood of good news, and even if I could that would mean I’d never post anything else on the Pets blog. As tempting as that sounds, it’s important that I keep my articles diverse. So today I’m going to profile a new website, Pet Pardons, that provides animal rescue stories 24/7. Now, you’re not likely to find many tales of hero dogs alerting their owners to midnight fires on Pet Pardons. … Continue reading

Getting Serious About Heat Conservation Part 2

There are so many needs these days, and wants are definitely on the back burner. One way that the economy has affected us, even in our normally frugal living home is that some of our priorities are shifting. One of these priorities is to do some serious steps toward heat conservation. In the previous post, I spoke about insulation and our dilemma about our attic. You can click here to read that earlier post. We are still doing our research to figure out the best solution for that one. Meanwhile, there is one other change we have made this past … Continue reading

The Strays of Our Lives

I love stories about strays. Why? Because there’s usually a deeper story there. One that proves strays are not just strays, but the strays of our lives who’ve come into them in different forms and for different reasons. Kindred Spirits Have you ever looked into a dog or cat’s eyes and without speaking, touching, or sharing anymore time together than those initial first moments, you knew them? You read their soul, they read yours –instantly. That’s a kindred pet spirit connection. Wayne had that with Budly. I loved that little Cocker with my heart and soul but truly him and … Continue reading

Amazing Wake Up Calls

I was taking a nap yesterday afternoon — hadn’t slept well Saturday night — under just about perfect conditions. There was a light breeze coming in through the open window and the blinds were closed enough to keep the sun out of my eyes. And then my dog Lally stepped on my head. The one drawback of liking to sleep with the windows open and feel a breeze on my face is that my bed is directly under the windows. Lally’s favorite place to look out when there’s a weird noise out front is from my bed. (Her second favorite … Continue reading

Pet Projects: Make a Video, Write a Story, Nominate a Hero

Recently I put together a compilation of cool pet and/or animal related sites that people had shared with me. Below is another compilation of sorts, but these tips were not passed on to me by fellow Families.com members. Instead, these are ones I came across at random and thought you, my fellow pet lovers, would enjoy learning about if you haven’t already stumbled across them yourselves. 2007 ASPCA Humane Awards The ASPCA wants to know who your heroes are –both human and animal. Know a cat or dog who performed a heroic act? What about a law enforcement officer or … Continue reading
