Ask a Pets Blogger: Helping Pets with Flaky Skin

by Aimee Amodio

05 Sep 2009 05:05 PM

My cat has terrible dandruff... at least I think it's dandruff! She's always got flakes on her skin and in her coat. What can I do to clear this up? This is a conversation I get to have often at the cats-only boarding facility where I work.

How Not to Clean Your Dog's Ears

by Aimee Amodio

29 Jul 2009 07:31 PM

My dog Moose has been doing that head shake lately -- the one that says ear mites might be to blame. If you're a dog owner, you may know what I'm talking about: one ear at half mast, frantic head shaking, lots of ear scratching.

Three Cheers for the Furminator!

I'm an unusual person, I guess, so my friends and family get me unusual presents. One of my best gifts EVER was my Dremel tool (a gift from my parents for Christmas a few years ago). I love that thing. For my birthday in March, my roommates got me a Furminator. I know, I know...

Grooming: Sanitary Clip

by Aimee Amodio

For long haired pets, a sanitary clip may be a good grooming option. What is a sanitary clip? A vet or groomer will remove hair from areas that can get stinky and dirty from urine and feces. The area may be entirely shaved or simply trimmed to make cleaning easier and prevent cling-ons.

Oops! I Did It Again!

(With apologies to Brittany Spears for tweaking her title!) Today was spontaneously declared Toenail Trimming Day. I've only done the dogs' toenails once since we moved back in the beginning of January... so those little piggies were long overdue for some snipping.

Did you know that the skin is the heaviest organ in your pet's body? It can account for an average sixteen percent of your pet's total weight! What does the skin do?

by Aimee Amodio

My dog Moose is in need of a bath. He's the kind of dog who needs a bath every few months to keep dander down and coat grease-free. He's generally good in the bath; I'm not worried about the bath itself. What I'm worried about is the aftermath: drying off.

Human Preferences about Grooming

Once in a while, a long-haired guest at the cats-only boarding facility will get a little messy in the caboose region (if you get my drift). Sometimes a spot-cleaning or a full bath can take care of the problem.

How Do Ionic Brushes Work?

by Aimee Amodio

Have you seen ads for ionic brushes for pets? They don't just brush the fur -- they can also help reduce pet smells. So how do they work? Ionic brushes break down water molecules in your pet's coat and release safe levels of ozone into the air. This helps neutralize pet smells.

Make Bathing Easy: Prep First!

When it's my turn to do baths at the cats-only boarding facility, the right preparation makes the work a lot easier. Before I even think about fetching a cat into the grooming room, I make sure I've set up the hand-held sprayer, towels, shampoo, nail clippers, and blow dryer.
