Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Contagious Cautions

Not all boarding facilities are equipped to handle guests (feline or otherwise) with health issues. Because we’re owned by and attached to a veterinarian’s office, the staff at the cats-only boarding facility is trained to do some unusual things. We administer oral medications (pills and liquids), topical medications (like creams applied to the inside of the ear), injections (like insulin for diabetic kitties), and even subcutaneous fluids (for guests who are dehydrated). But sometimes, we get a guest with a serious health issue that could possibly be contagious to other guests. We work very hard to ensure that the ill … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Outbreak Aftermath

After several of our guests got sick with an upper respiratory virus, we decided it was time for a major cleaning. We’re already very dedicated to cleaning at the cats-only boarding facility. The condos are cleaned as soon as a guest leaves, and at least once per week if they sit empty. The floors are swept and mopped twice per day. The playroom and exam room are sanitized after each cat is inside. But after four cats came down with a kind of cold, we didn’t want to chance other guests catching the same runny nose, runny eyes, and sneezing. … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: I’m in Charge!

Thanks to a wacky set of coincidences that have both my coworkers unavailable, I’m in charge of the cats-only boarding facility for the next few days. I won’t be making any drastic changes during my reign of terror… but I do have some projects I’d like to tackle. A few big cleaning projects. We do wipe down, mop, and sanitize the playroom several times per day… but I’m dying to get the scrub brush and make that floor sparkle. Same with some spots in the main boarding room that get mopped frequently but need some elbow grease and hot water … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: The Test

Some days really test your coping skills. Today was one of those days at the cats-only boarding facility. Let me say right off the bat that I have some pretty awesome coworkers. The gal I worked with today did a HUGE share of the work while I dealt with one surprise after another. The worst surprise was the first one… but it really set the tone for the entire shift. The cat who was in the playroom overnight must have gotten spooked or upset or just plain sick — this morning, the room was full of poop. And when I … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Smelly Cat

If you were a fan of Friends, you may remember Phoebe’s song called “Smelly Cat”. The lyrics went something like this: Smelly cat, smelly cat… what are they feeding you? Smelly cat, smelly ca-at, it’s not your fault! And hoo boy, did we have some smelly cats at the cats-only boarding facility over the Memorial Day weekend! But just like there are lots of different personalities in our guests, there are lots of different smells. Some cats have food that smells awful. We have one guest (who I adore) who eats the grossest-looking and smelling food. I swear, it looks … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Full House!

I was warned, when I started my new part time job at the felines-only boarding facility, that the holidays would be a very busy time. That was NOT an understatement! Over the next few days, we are at full capacity — forty-five guests in the main boarding facility, plus another twelve in the quiet rooms on the veterinarian side of the office. There’s nothing quite like the chorus of meows that greets me in the morning. And we have all sorts of cats here, too. Lots of cute kittens — they tend to be the most vocal ones. A few … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for December 17-23

Merry Christmas Eve! Maybe you were like me and rushing around last week doing last minute Christmas errands, which left you little time for reading. (Or much else for that matter.) If that’s the case, and you want to catch up on what Aimee and I dished about here in the Pets Blog, look no further. You’ve found the handiest tool around: the Week in Review. Monday, December 17 Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Cleanliness Aimee’s new job made more good fodder for the Pets Blog. She explained what she spends the majority of her time doing at the … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Cleanliness

Cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning. The bulk of my hours at the cat boarding facility are taken up with cleaning. The first thing I do in the morning is empty the litter pans. Each guest room has a separate, private area for the litter pan. Spray the nook down with a cleaning solution, wipe it clean, and put in a fresh pan and fresh litter. After all the litter pans have been emptied, I take the garbage out. A bag full of last night’s litter and waste can be pretty heavy! Then I sweep the whole room to gather up … Continue reading
