Quiet Companions (of the Feline Persuasion)

We have some guests at the cats-only boarding facility who are known talkers. Personally, I like the talkers. They’re good company! Sometimes, I talk back… but then I’m always talking to the dogs at home, too. Like I said, good company. But there are times when the talking can get to be overwhelming. I recently saw a list of the most talkative and the least talkative cat breeds — and if talkability is important to you in a pet, the info might be useful. At the very least, I hope it’s interesting! You can maybe guess the most talkative breed … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

You’re probably familiar of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde — a doctor who is transformed into a monster by drinking a potion. Both characters are two sides of the same person; one a creature of evil and cruelty and one a brilliant and friendly man. Sometimes, it seems like our guests at the cats-only boarding facility must be drinking the same potion. Cats that are perfectly calm and well-behaved for us may be stressed or violent on the vet side of the building (and vice versa). Once in a while, I get a look at both sides … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Kitten Mania!

I tend to think of spring and early summer as kitten time, more than fall. But we’ve had a bunch of kittens make an appearance at the cats-only boarding facility lately. It started when one of our vets — Doctor K. — came back from a weekend trip. While she was hiking with the family, they were approached by a pair of very young kittens. As Doctor K. described it, they came bounding out of a field towards the family! She trapped the kittens and brought them home (much to the disgust of her two adult male cats), then into … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Many Voices

We have a guest at the cats-only boarding facility who has the cutest little voice. He sounds kind of like a cross between a frog and a little old man who smoked a lot. His meow is kind of gravelly — it almost sounds like he’s saying “hello” instead of “meow”. There are definitely some guests who are talkers. We have one infamous visitor who hardly shuts up the entire time he’s with us. Personally, I think he’s good company… although he is VERY loud. I’m surprised they can’t hear him over on the vet side of the building. We … Continue reading

Taking Care of a Fearful Cat

I’ve learned a lot about different cat personalities in my new part-time job. I’ve met playful cats, shy cats, serious cats, stressed cats, and everything in between. I’ve also run into my share of fearful cats. My favorite so far has been the little grey cat who hid underneath her bed for four days straight. Eventually, we coaxed her out from under the covers for some petting. After that, she seemed to be over her fear and ready for some human company. It took at least two days before she would even peek out from underneath the blanket to look … Continue reading
