Getting Cheap with Pet Toys

Or… what to do with all those old, mismatched socks? There’s an interesting phenomenon going on in my sock drawer: all my socks are sprouting leaks at the same time. Okay, maybe it’s not that interesting when I recall the fact that I tend to buy my socks in six packs. It’s no wonder they’re all wearing out at the same time — I bought them at the same time! But I’m left with a bunch of socks with extra holes, and I’m not sure what to do with them. After much thought, I came up with two ideas: Quick … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review endured somewhat of a hiatus the past month or so, but now it’s back. DIY Chew Toy

My brother’s two dogs are super chewers. We often have a hard time finding toys that will survive for more than a few minutes around their powerful jaws! Recently, I wondered if I could make a toy that would stand up to a power chewer. In theory, it isn’t hard to make a dog toy. Just take the fabric of your choosing, sew it into a simple shape like a rectangle or circle, stuff it with cotton batting, and close the hole. Easy, right? But when you’re dealing with power chewers, you have to be even more crafty. You need … Continue reading

Recycling Old T-Shirts

I wrote a blog a while back about how you could recycle old jeans. But, I forgot about old t-shirts – something I have plenty of! What can you do with an old t-shirt? Here are a few ideas: Throw Pillows Old t-shirts, if they are not stained, make excellent throw pillows. Cut a square from the front and back body of the shirt, stuff, and sew together. You can even cut smaller squares from different colored shirts and sew them together to make a more decorative throw pillow. If you have a t-shirt with a logo you love, use … Continue reading

The Greatest Game

When my husband and I got married, we received what would seem to others like an unusual gift from his older sister. Next to the beautiful hand-painted serving bowl she gave us, she included a book: “50 Games to Play with Your Dog,” by Suellen Dainty. Jon and I didn’t own a dog, plus that’s not exactly the sort of gift one expects to receive for a wedding. However, my sister-in-law and I are close, and she knew me well enough to know that I’d wanted a dog all my life, and that I was eager to get one as … Continue reading

Bad Weather and Active Pets

Fall and winter in the Pacific Northwest often means rain. And rain means MUD! There are days I want to walk my dogs in hip boots and a full-length coat (at least I have the coat, in a muddish shade of brown so the splatters don’t show). There are some days I don’t want to leave the house at all. Lally (my boxer mix) is the same way! She’s a funny little girl: she hates the rain, and hates getting wet. On days when the skyfall is constant, it’s hard to get her more than a few steps outside the … Continue reading
