Fourth of July Pet Safety

On Friday one of the DJ’s for my local radio station mentioned upcoming Fourth of July celebrations, and she warned dog owners about fireworks. She said that she sees more fliers go up for missing dogs on July 5 than just about any other day of the year, all because of the fireworks noise. It’s something that never occurred to me, but it makes a lot of sense. Depending on where you live and how loud noise from fireworks might be in your yard, Independence Day, while fun for us humans, could prove frightening for our pets. If you keep … Continue reading

Let the Fireworks Begin!

Last night around nine o’clock, somebody started in with the fireworks. I live across the street from the local high school and middle school, and there’s lots of open space available between the sports fields and parking lots. Through the open window, I could hear the crackle of the fireworks, followed by a whole lot of hooting and hollering. Right around the same time I was hearing the beginnings of Fourth of July celebrations, a friend posted on her blog about her dog’s reaction to fireworks. Some trainers suggest simply ignoring the behavior. If cuddle your frightened pet or try … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Holiday Aftermath

I’m pleased to report that we survived the holiday rush at the cats only boarding facility! When they said we were expecting a full house, they meant it. We had forty-five cats in the main part of the boarding facility and another twelve housed in the isolation wards in the veterinary clinic side. Plus an extra six cats tucked into various rooms around the building — the x-ray room, a spare exam room, and one vet’s office. Full indeed! The schedule got pretty hectic. Taking care of sixty-three cats can use up quite a bit of time! And that’s sixty-three … Continue reading
