My Favorite Pet Blogs from the Past Year

Below is a list of my favorite articles I wrote during the past year, often with an explanation of what made them memorable. Five Non-Cash Ways to Help Animals/Shelters this Holiday Season: This was my first article to have a comment left on it. Is It Ever Okay to Kick a Dog?: This was my first article to ever get stars. The BMK Fund: This practice is very near and dear to my heart and it was neat to have a platform such as blogging for Families.com to share it on. The Pets Blog Week in Review for Jul 30 – Aug 5

Goodbye July, hello the hot, hot heat of August. Things were not too hot last week in the Pets Blog. Aimee and I tried to keep things cool. Although we did sort of get off on a morbid tangent at one point during the week. (I should say I did, in respect to the matter of pet’s dying.) Happily we also covered plenty of other, less sad, topics too. Monday, July 30 Sharks fascinate me so I was pretty excited about Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. But when I watched their inaugural program, Oceans of Fear, I couldn’t help but wonder … Continue reading

Dollywood is For the Birds (Among Other Things)

While Murphy enjoyed Doggywood during our recent Smoky Mountain Getaway, Wayne and I enjoyed Dollywood. And we truly enjoyed it. Especially me, because at every turn I discovered this was no ordinary amusement park. In addition to the exciting rides, craftsman exhibits, and great food, there was also an emphasis on animal conservation. Eagle Mountain Sanctuary As far as birds go, Dolly is definitely for them. In particular the bald eagle. I’m not sure exactly how many eagles call the 30,000 square foot aviary known as Eagle Mountain Sanctuary home, but what a nice one they have! (And apparently it’s … Continue reading

What Were Those Eagles Thinking?

Yesterday on my way to the grocery store I was listening to the radio. As I pulled into the parking lot the announcer was getting ready to talk about news stories. “In Alaska, nearly two dozen bald eagles are dead after an unfortunate encounter with a truck.” Say what? Instead of shutting off the engine and going inside as planned, I hung around to hear why so many of these once endangered species had died at once. Them Crazy Birds Turns out they were responsible for their own demise. The temptation? A truck full of fish waste outside of a … Continue reading

Taking Stock of 2007

It’s that time of year for reflection and resolution making. Last year in New Year, New Resolutions I detailed my goals for both the Pets Blog and animal/pet related personal goals. Now it’s time to see how I did. Pets Blog Goals These were my goals: • To continue promoting the importance of being kind, considerate, and compassionate to the animals we share this Earth with. • To feature more organizations dedicated to animals, be they ones helping animals or training animals to help others. • To feature pet friendly activities that the whole family can enjoy. • To emphasize … Continue reading

The Endangered Osprey’s Struggle in New Jersey

The osprey is a large bird of prey, also known as a raptor. In the 1800s and earlier, osprey populations in New Jersey were abundant. These birds could be found along the coast and near bodies of fresh water — where fish populations were available for feeding. This bird of prey has a huge wingspan — between four and a half and six feet wide. When the osprey glides, it pulls the wings into its body. If you see an osprey from the ground, the wings and body may look like the letter M. The underside of the osprey is … Continue reading
