Spending on Pets Skyrockets

Despite our recession (though apparently it’s recovering), some industries are on the rise. One of them, according to BBC News, is the pet industries. That’s right, in a time when pet food banks are growing at Animal Control facilities across the country and some people are still losing/struggling to stay in their homes, Americans are spending more on their pets than ever before. As you might guess, 65% of the overall amount spent is on food and veterinary costs. More people are also buying pet insurance. Maybe this just indicates that more people are looking to own more pets. This … Continue reading

More Ways to Spice Up Seasonal Pet Shots

Okay, I’ve never actually seen a real hamster dressed up in a Santa’s hat for a Christmas card shoot, but that’s what Photoshop is for, right? Clearly, some pets are easier to deck out for a holiday photo shoot than others, but that shouldn’t stop you from adding your Fur Baby to a festive scene. Even if Fido doesn’t want to keep the reindeer antlers on his head, you can make him look merry by placing him in front of a seasonal background. Christmas trees and fireplaces are ideal backdrops for Christmas photos. Another option is to take Fluffy outside … Continue reading

Keeping Pets Safe on Halloween

Halloween is my favorite holiday. I think it’s due to many happy childhood memories I have of this season and of this holiday in particular. But it just might be my pets’ least favorite, as a new report calls Halloween the most dangerous holiday for pets. The Baltimore Sun has the scoop from the Pet Poison Hotline. Just hearing the name of the company releasing the report makes it obvious why Halloween is considered so dangerous: chocolate. That’s right; the hotline says that calls made to it go up 12% this time of year. The first step I should take … Continue reading

A Merry Christmas for Pets

For Chihiro and Cole, seeing a rabbit this close is like Christmas My extended family used to have a unique Christmas tradition. As we circled around the living room to exchange gifts, pet-owning relatives handed out special presents to other family members with pets: presents to dog and cat cousins from each other. That’s right: my aunt’s dog Chessie might receive a wrapped bone from my other aunt’s cat Patches. I have no idea how the tradition started; it’s one I remember always being there as I grew up. When my family finally got a cat we were then included … Continue reading

Household Plants Poisonous to Pets

With autumn upon us and the holidays soon to follow, many households have begun seasonal decorating. A lot of that decorating involves various sorts of plants, and with that come many pet owners’ concerns over whether those plants are poisonous to their furry family members. The ASPCA has a helpful list of commonly kept plants that will hurt your pet and one that actually gets a bad reputation. The site names poinsettia as one of the most misunderstood plants, revealing that about 70% of the population believe that it is poisonous to their pets when in fact it isn’t really. … Continue reading

Dressing Up Pets

With my favorite holiday Halloween coming up soon, costumes are on the mind. We have to help the kids get theirs ready, and maybe some of us still dress up ourselves (I certainly do). But what about buying or creating costumes for our pets? I’m curious what you guys think about dressing pets up in costumes. For the past few years I’ve managed to come up with partnered costume ideas for my husband and I (which is a feat, because he won’t wear many types of costumes) to wear to our friends’ annual Halloween party. We usually stay for the … Continue reading

PETCO Has a Halloween Costume Contest For Pets

Does your pet have a vibrant personality? Does it seem like your pet has as much fun dressing up in a Halloween costume as you do seeing him or her wearing it? If so, you should enter your pet in the PETCO costume contest. There are over $1,000 in prizes, just waiting to be won! For many people, Halloween is a fun holiday. Pet owners can dress up their pets in cute, scary, or downright amusing costumes, just for fun. Of course, it is helpful if your dog or cat happens to like wearing “clothing”. I can’t quite decide what … Continue reading

My Favorite Halloween Couple Costumes: Period Costumes

Is it just me, or is there something incredibly romantic about costumes from bygone eras? From medieval gowns to antebellum garb, I’m completely enchanted with the prospect of dressing in the clothes our ancestors once wore. Halloween is a wonderful time of year. It serves as an excuse to indulge the dress-up fantasy. (Face it, just because we get older doesn’t mean the urge to pretend we’re someone else like we once did as children vanishes.) But I know not everyone shares my enthusiasm about this. Wayne will dress up, but he prefers funny costumes to fancier ones. (Which he … Continue reading

Places I’ve Spotted the Funniest Halloween Couple Costumes

Cat in the Hat Wayne and Saloon Girl Courtie Earlier this month Karri posted some really great suggestions for couple costumes. (I loved the Baker and Bun in the Oven one…I thought that was so cute!) It caught my attention because every year I scour through catalogs and Internet sites looking for couple costume ideas. Wayne and I always dress up, but we’ve never dressed up to compliment one another. He’s always his own unique thing separate from whatever I choose. (Mainly because Wayne’s a prankster and gravitates towards comical costumes, whereas I go the adventurous route –pirates, saloon girls, … Continue reading

The Pets of 9/11

The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 impacted every facet of life imaginable. From people on the planes and those in the buildings that were hit to the rescue workers and all the friends and family members that were ultimately and irreversibly affected. Not to mention the nation as a whole. As did most Americans, I sat glued to my television most of that first day and more than usual in the days that followed. I was rooting with everyone else that anyone trapped in the rubble at Ground Zero would be found alive, and of course there was a … Continue reading
