Courtney and Crew Present: Mother’s Day Merriment

Most Mother’s Days are fairly uneventful. Maybe Wayne (known as Papa to Murphy, Tabby, and Mr. Meow) will make breakfast in bed for me. Usually he tries to get cards that they can all write a nice sentiment in. (With his help of course.) Once in a while he gets flowers. Any and all of the above then become sources of merriment for the crew. Hopefully the flowers are roses, which are the cats’ favorite. Cards left unattended on countertops become prime shredding targets. (As do the envelopes which hopefully aren’t immediately discarded in the trash.) And breakfast? Begging time! … Continue reading

My Favorite Television Moms

First of all, Happy Mother’s Day! Now, let’s get down to the business of this blog – my favorite television mothers! Television has been around for a while, so I have about 60 or so years of shows from which to choose. If I left out one of your favorites, please let me know! 10. Florida Evans – “Good Times” Oh sure, you might not be living in the lap of luxury, but you would sure have a lot of love. Florida showed her love for J.J., Thelma, and Michael all the time, but she wasn’t afraid to offer them … Continue reading

Animal Holidays and Observances There Should Be If There Aren’t Already

Last year I was pretty good about tracking the different animal/pet related holidays and observances with articles like Appreciating Elephants (in honor of Elephant Appreciation Day), Have You Hugged Your Sea-Monkeys Today?, Happy World Turtle Day!, and Hug Your Cat Day: Come Here, Tabby and Mr. Meow!. That’s just to name a few. There were more (see the list below for some others, including some Aimee wrote). The past few months I’ve been thinking about the number and variety of holidays and observances I found –and the ones I don’t think exist that have occurred to me since. I decided … Continue reading

National Dog Day: Got $5 Bucks?

I’d heard of Take Your Dog to Work Day but I had not heard of National Dog Day. I came across it on one of the lists I check periodically to find pet and/or animal celebration days to write about. Well, the reason I had never heard about it before is because it’s relatively new. If I lived in California, specifically near Malibu, I might have heard about it sooner. National Dog Day events are taking over Calamigos Ranch in Malibu today with activities like Most Beautiful Male and Female, a “Little Dog” Model Search for dogs 25 pounds and … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for May 7 – May 13

Aimee and her pooches Lally and Moose spent last week on a cross-country trek to get to their new home, so most of the contributions to the Pets Blog are mine I’m afraid. (In case you’re wondering how Aimee and her crew are doing, I did hear from her once last week. There was a Moose incident during one of the hotel stops involving a pizza delivery that I’m sure she’ll relate somewhere down the line, but other than that the trip seemed to be going well. I’ll be excited for her to return and am looking forward to reading … Continue reading

For the Pet Moms: Happy Mother’s Day

Actually, I’m not trying to be discriminatory. Happy Mother’s Day to all moms! It’s just that some people turn their noses up at, or take offense to, women like myself who treat their pets like kids and consider themselves moms nonetheless. In years past, I have had people balk when we get to talking about how our husbands celebrated us on Mother’s Day. “Wayne gave you a card? He made you breakfast in bed? He took you out for a nice dinner? Why? You guys don’t have any kids.” No, I don’t have kids. Well, what I mean to say … Continue reading

Happy Mother’s Day

Is it really Sunday? I’m exhausted today. I’ve got a ton of work to do and all these end of the year functions going on with our daughter. (Excuse me, I have to giggle over the thought of saying I have ‘functions’ to attend, but I do). Today is Mother’s Day and it’s a day that we honor the mothers in our lives. I like this day, of course, I’m a mom now and even though I’ve been a mom for years and I still have a hard time remembering that today is Mother’s Day. First Thing This Morning I … Continue reading

Mother’s Day Gifts for Pet Moms

I don’t have children –human ones, that is—but I do have my dog and two cats and I do consider myself their mom. So does my husband. Most Mother’s Days he spoils me with cards from both the pets and himself expressing their appreciation for all I do for them. It’s a dearly treasured gesture. (A lot of times it’s even accompanied with breakfast in bed or the question, “Where would you like me to take you for breakfast today?” Since I’m a big breakfast lover, this is one of the best gifts I can get!) The other day while … Continue reading

Birthday Party Anxiety

In my 24 years of parenting I have anecdotally confirmed that many parents suffer from Birthday Party Performance Anxiety. I include myself in the anecodotal research. The thought of throwing a birthday party fills me with fits of condemnation over my housekeeping, cooking and organizational skills. I hate housework, I love cooking when I don’t have to do it or clean up after myself, and I hate having to focus on 27 million screaming children who all want the first prize for a game of “Pin the wart on the witch”. Exaggerating I am, but you get the drift I’m … Continue reading

The Importance of Listening

How could I possibly resist listening to this adorable angel? My daughter’s smile can light up a room, but her insanely long recaps of lunchroom drama between five girls, a shoe, a note and some other item that I have no earthly idea about, are far from illuminating. In fact, her convoluted conspectuses often make my ears burn, though the pain could actually be my brain frying, as I try to decipher what green socks and Eggplant Parmesan  have to do with how she fared on Friday’s spelling test. I try to make sense of it all, but I’m old. … Continue reading
