French Bulldog

Not surprisingly, the French bulldog has the English bulldog as an ancestor. During the late 1800s, English breeders sent a lot of toy-sized bulldogs into France. English bulldogs bred with various other breeds, resulting in the “Boule-Dog” (say it out loud, it sounds like bulldog). Early on, the French bulldog came it two varieties — one with rose ears (like an English bulldog) and one with upright bat ears. European breeders were inclined to breed for the rose ear, but American dog breeders objected. Eventually, breeders stuck universally to the distinctive bat ears. The breed got a lot of good … Continue reading

“A Dog is Not a Barbie Doll.” (and Other “Greatest” Quotes)

Recently I wrote about how I’m loving the new reality show “The Greatest American Dog.” One of the reasons I find it so endearing is because of the people. Both the dog owners and the judges. I‘ve only watched one episode (the second, because I missed the first), but that one episode spoke volumes about the experience of being a dog owner and dog lover. There were three quotes in particular that really grabbed me. Quote #1 “She’s not a pet, she’s a companion.” Bill about his dog Star. That one isn’t word for word, but it’s the general idea. … Continue reading

What to Know Before you Fly with Fido—Part 3

Now that you which airlines will allow your pampered pet to fly in style you should be aware of some of the restrictions that are associated with transporting animals on airplanes. Summer Travel If you are taking to the skies with Fido or Fifi during the summer months, it’s important to remember that most airlines have temperature restrictions in place during that time frame (May through September). If it’s over 85 degrees Fahrenheit, airlines will not fly pets as checked baggage — the same applies if it’s below 45 degrees. In addition, some airlines have restrictions on certain types of … Continue reading

Besides the jambalaya he’ll be making the following shrimp dishes. Fresh shrimp is readily available … Continue reading

Where Are You Ringing in 2008?

There was a time in my life when there was no place I would rather ring in the new year than New York’s Times Square. I remember as a child watching the glittering ball descend on the Big Apple on TV from my home on the Big Island of Hawaii (five hours after it had actually dropped). I spent years dreaming of being in the midst of the pomp and pageantry. That was a few decades ago, and now Times Square is probably the last place on the planet I’d want to be at 11:59:59 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. … Continue reading

Lop and Mini-Lop Rabbits

Lops are known for their distinctive ears — which flop over, rather than stand straight up. Lops are among the oldest breeds of domesticated rabbits, and come in many different varieties. English Lop: the lop known for the longest ears. Some English lop ears can be more than twenty inches long! French Lop: a variety of lop thought to come from cross breeding the English lop with another breed. Holland Lop: a variety of lop that is muscular and compact. Ears are slightly shorter, and should be no more than one inch below the chin. Dwarf Lop: a variety of … Continue reading

In Memoriam: The Animals Aboard Titanic

On this date in 1912, the Titanic, touted as unsinkable, sunk. As I was rewatching James Cameron’s Titanic for the umpteenth time the other day, I got to wondering about the scene where Leonardo DiCaprio is hanging out with a group of guys on the third class deck. A couple of stewards walk by with dogs and one of the guys he’s with makes a comment about it. I sort of took it for granted all of the other times I’ve seen it, but this time it hit me: “Were there really dogs on board? If so, what happened to … Continue reading

Puppy Bowl III

While we were hanging out during Super Bowl Sunday last year, Wayne was channel surfing and happened across the Animal Planet‘s Puppy Bowl. He quit surfing so we could watch, knowing I’d get a kick out of it. We both ended up awing over the puppies romping about in a football field pen replica. And then we both cracked up over the Kitty Half Time Show, where a bunch of kittens with a carpeted stage enhanced with toys frolicked about. I’d forgotten all about it until, in a turn of déjà vu, we were hanging out yesterday afternoon watching TV, … Continue reading
