Treating Chin Acne in Pets

Don’t stress too much if your pet develops chin acne — it’s a relatively common problem in dogs and cats! One of the most common causes for chin acne is allergies. A pet may be allergic to fleas, foods, plastic in bowls, or inhaled particles like pollen and mold spores. Dealing with the allergy can make a big difference in many cases of chin acne. Treat your pet with a monthly flea/tick preventative like Frontline, Advantage, Sentinel, or Revolution. Spray your home and yard to clear up flea infestations if one is present or suspected. Eliminate plastic food and water … Continue reading

The Family That Plays, Potties, Drinks, Sleeps, and Heals Together Stays Together

Something life with Murphy has made me realize lately is that Wayne, me, and our fur kids are one tight knit clan. Which is sort of a remarkable thing in one respect. On the one hand, we’re a family made up of humans and animals. We’re not related by blood, but our bond is as strong as any blood bond could be. On the other hand, it’s hard to believe that just a little over a year ago we were a house divided. (Literally. Wayne was in Florida working a new job while I stayed behind trying to sell the … Continue reading

Look at That Cat Grass Grow!

In a recent article, I wrote about how I bought a couple cat grass kits that my mom had pointed out to me. One was for their drinking fountain, the other was a freestanding Kitty Garden. The Aqua Garden The Drinkwell Aqua Garden Pet Grass really surprised me. It’s just a little blue container that clips to the side of the Drinkwell fountain. There’s no soil, just seeds. “Grass is really going to grow in here?” I wondered doubtfully. Oh man, did it! The directions specified a trim of the roots might be needed, but I actually had to cut … Continue reading

Murphy Meets His Cousins

It was a big day around here on Wednesday. I kept telling Murphy (and the cats, too) that their cousins were coming and they’d get to meet them. Being smart like he is and understanding what I’m telling him, Murph was all jazzed up. “Cousins? As in plural? Little guys named Charm and Chenille? Cool!” (Well, really they’re little girls, but Murph uses “guys” generically for any gender.) He helped me straighten and clean, a sure sign guests were expected. But as morning turned to afternoon and afternoon was succumbing to early evening, it became obvious he was starting to … Continue reading

Grandma Dorothy’s Top Doctors Foster and Smith Cat Catalog Picks

When I recruited Murphy, Tabby, and Mr. Meow to help in the personal pet therapy project, they had no idea their Grandma Dorothy might want to show her appreciation for their help by shopping for them. But that’s what she’s been dong the past few days –via one of the Doctors Foster and Smith catalogs. Specifically the one just for cats. The Doctors Foster and Smith catalogs are among my favorite pet catalogs to browse through. (And, yes, even buy from. The Drinkwell Pet Fountain and the infamous cat cottage are two prime examples.) But I have to admit I … Continue reading

Pets and Their Food Bowls

What’s your pet’s food bowl like? Plain and simple? Personalized? An old people dish making due as your pet’s food (and/or water) dish? Or did you buy one sold in a pet store? I got to thinking about pets and their food bowls because of a quirk the cats have when it comes to their bowls. And that led me to thinking about even more things, as represented by the headings below. How Many Bowls Do Your Pets Have? Do you have one food bowl and one water dish per pet? (For multi-pet households.) Or does each pet have more … Continue reading

Chaotic Cat Chronicles: The Cats vs. The Oxygen Machine

When my mom fell sick a few weeks back she was put on oxygen while in the hospital. Since her oxygen saturation level still wasn’t where it should be when she was released, they had to put her on oxygen at home. At her house she had the same set up we ended up getting for her once I brought her here. It’s a little machine with tubing (we call it her tether) that lets her roam pretty much everywhere while still being connected to the oxygen. Since she has no pets, she could wander at will at her house … Continue reading

Pet Horoscopes: What’s Your Pet’s Sign?

I find astrology really interesting. I know some people would argue it’s evil because it goes against the teachings of their religions. I have no idea whether it’s bad or not. I just know astrology predates many of those religions and that even presidents as recent as Ronald Reagan have consulted astrologers to guide them in their daily affairs. I also don’t know if there really is something to the way the stars and planets are lined up that affect us, but I have noticed a couple of things. One, when it’s a full moon people do tend to act … Continue reading

Shopping the Catalogs: Pet Lovers Paradise

‘Tis the season when catalogs clutter our mailboxes. Unlike some people who immediately toss them, I shop them. I never know what I might find, and this year I found a ton of cool stuff for pet and animal lovers and owners as well as for pets themselves. I don’t know if it’s because I’m paying more attention this year or if the catalog companies have caught on to our passion for pets. Whatever it is, it does seem like every catalog this year offered a bunch more pet products than ever before. Whether you’re a dog person, cat person, … Continue reading

What to Do If You’re Concerned about Lead Paint in Your Pet’s Products

Yesterday I wrote how children’s toys aren’t the only thing testing positive for lead paint. So are pet products, like food and water bowls and bird cages. Here’s some things to keep in mind if you’re worried about pet products you have in your household: 1) Check labels. Made in China instantly makes me wary anymore, but that doesn’t automatically mean lead’s in the paint. Also, some products specifically indicated paint used contains lead. 2) If labels are no help and you want to determine if your pet’s bowls or toys contain lead, buy a testing kit. (Options include the … Continue reading
