Fun and Free Activities for People and Pets

I've heard it said (and said it myself): a bored pet can be a destructive pet. Many animals are happiest when they have a job, be it herding sheep or performing tricks. But if your pet isn't "employed" you can still keep him or her entertained.

The best part is that it doesn't have to cost a penny.

Here are some fun, free activities for you and your pets!

  • Grooming. Many pets like being brushed -- it's just a matter of finding the right brush and the right spot. My dog Moose, for example, is happy with any brush on any part of his body. My dog Lally is fussier about what she likes. She prefers soft bristles to needlelike ones, and her favorite spot for brushing is her neck and chest.
  • Walkies! Most dogs love going for a walk -- vary your route so they can see and smell new things. Not all pets are happy leaving the house, but you never know until you try. When I was little, we used to put a harness on our rabbit and walk him around the yard.
  • Go visiting. Maybe you know someone who's home alone who wouldn't mind a visit from a furry friend. Maybe there's a pet-friendly place you can make a field trip to... although that could involve spending some money. Maybe you could bring your pet to an assisted living facility to visit the folks there -- though that one depends on the facility's rules and regulations. Some require CGC certification; others may only ask for proof of current vaccinations.
  • Invite folks over. Inviting other pets may or may not work, depending on how social your pets are -- but new pet-friendly people can be exciting! Moose had a marvelous time the other day when my roommate's family came by... he suddenly had four new friends to sniff and lick, and they were generous with the petting!
  • Play with water. One of my roommates' cats will wander into my bathroom to get me to turn on the sink. She likes to watch and drink the water! Moosedog loves playing with the hose. A cheap kiddie pool can be hours of fun for you and your water-loving pet.
  • Cuddle up for TV or a nap. I love to snooze with one dog on either side of me -- I feel so warm, cozy, and loved. And the pups are usually good at letting me sleep (with a few exceptions).
