Hospital Stays for Pets

Many surgical procedures for pets are done on an outpatient basis. You drop your friend off early in the morning, and pick him up at the end of the day. But if your furry pal has to stay overnight or for several nights... you may be wondering if a visit will cheer him up or just make things worse.

Why you may want to visit your pet in the hospital:

  • If your pet is refusing to eat, a familiar face may encourage normal eating behavior.
  • If you would like to see first hand how your pet is doing.
  • If permitted, to bring familiar items from home or an article of clothing that carries your scent.
  • If permitted, to bring food or treats from home.
  • Because you miss your friend and seeing him will make you feel better.

Why you may not want to visit your pet in the hospital:

  • If your pet suffers from separation anxiety, the stress of your departure may be worse than the benefits of your presence.
  • If you will be upset seeing your pet in poor health -- your emotional state won't go unnoticed by your pet.

Before you decide whether or not to make a visit, talk to your veterinarian or one of the hospital staff. They may have specific rules about visits, or even specific visiting hours like a human hospital. They may or may not allow treats and toys from home in the treatment areas.

If you do decide to bring over a toy or blanket from home, make sure it is one you don't mind never seeing again. It is difficult for veterinary hospital staff to keep track of every pet's belongings. And if your pet gets sick on the item, it may be discarded, rather than washed.

Keep in mind that if you do choose to visit your pet, your emotional state can affect your pet. Animals are very sensitive to their people's emotions. If you are anxious, nervous, and upset, your pet will sense it, and react to it. If you can't stay positive, you may be better off not visiting your pet in the hospital!
