The Pets Blog Week in Review for Jun 11-17

What a week it was here in the Pets Blog last week. I thought I had troubles trying to find Wayne something from Murphy, Tabby, and Kitty for Father’s Day, but my problems were trivial when compared to what Aimee and Moose had to endure. (Okay, they were trivial anyway, but Aimee’s situation really brought that point home.) If you feel like you missed something, check out the daily recaps below to get caught up. Monday, June 11 Aimee, Moose, and Lally’s move has been anything but smooth. Unfortunately Moose’s bad luck continued last week when he broke free of … Continue reading

How Moose’s Misadventures Have Changed Him

Moose hasn’t had very good luck in the month we’ve been on the west coast. Barely our first full week in the state, and he got attacked at the dog park. Lucky for us, the nearest vet is also possibly the nicest — we’ve been seeing a lot of them. I wanted to make sure that we went back to the dog park relatively quickly, so that Moose wouldn’t have time to develop any weird fears about it. We went on a weekday, in the very early afternoon, hoping the park would be mostly empty. It was! The few dogs … Continue reading

Moose’s Love Affair with the UPS Man

This love story probably won’t hit the big screen any time soon: dog meets delivery driver. But it’s a love affair I get to watch on a regular basis. My dog Moose loves everyone. He’d happily get into an open car door, wander off with strangers… it doesn’t matter who. He loves everyone. It’s really very sweet. (My other dog, Lally, is much more timid around strangers.) But Moose has a few special people in his life, people he just goes NUTS for. My dad is one of them. The UPS man is another. Our local UPS driver seems to … Continue reading

One Year after Moose’s Car Accident

Today is just a few days past the one year mark of the day Moose slipped his collar, ran off after a cat, and got hit by a landscaping truck. What a year it’s been! I still get a twinge of guilt sometimes, looking at his little tail-less butt and thinking that I could have gotten a harness sooner, or somehow stopped him from darting off after the cat in the bushes. Looking at pictures of Moose before the accident gives me a little pang, too. Over the course of the year, Moose has started twitching his tail muscles when … Continue reading

Help Me Entertain My Dogs!

Hard to believe that it’s been almost a year since I took my dogs on a cross-country road trip and resettled on the west coast. Time sure flies! A lot has happened in that year, too (and poor Moose was at the center of a lot of the adventures). Since I just renewed my lease, the apartment management offered me my choice of three thank yous: a carpet cleaning, a blind cleaning, or a ceiling fan. I knew the fan was out — Lally is (for some strange reason) scared to death of ceiling fans. She won’t even walk into … Continue reading

Moose and Lally’s New Year’s Resolutions

With 2008 just a few days away, the dogs and I sat down to work on our New Year’s resolutions. Moose’s New Years Resolutions Moose resolves to stay out of traffic. For the rest of his life. He’s been pretty good since he got hit by a car back in June, but sometimes in the apartment complex parking lot, he has a bad habit of straying into the middle of the road between spots. Moose resolves to lose more weight. When we moved west in May, Moose weighed more than 100 pounds. His ideal weight is closer to 75. Slowly … Continue reading

The House Rule

Did you ever see a movie called “My Dog Skip”? I rented this one a few years ago and without giving too much of the plot away, was in tears at the end. In fact, I was still crying when I went to the video store to return the movie! Afterwards, I came up with a new house rule: pets are not allowed to die. Yes, I know this is a rule that’s going to get broken. But a girl can hope. The rule came up again today when a friend of mine had a bit of a scare. Her … Continue reading

Moose Update: He’s Healing and We’re All Adjusting

It’s been twelve days since Moose had his tail amputated — he was hit by a car on June 8th and broke his tail badly enough that the nerves and blood vessels were mostly severed. We’ve had two post-surgery check-ups, and the vet assures me that everything looks good. Since I’ve had a few e-mails and PMs asking after the big lug, I thought an update was in order. Stitches: for the most part, things are just fine with his stitches — he’s got a good six inches of stitches running up his rump. Moose has had a bit of … Continue reading
