The Dog in I Am Legend

“I was begging him,” Will said. “I was like, ‘Please let me have Abbey. Please, please, please let me have her.’ But you know, she has her own family now so it was just another one of those fleeting Hollywood romances. ~-From an Access Hollywood interview-~ As I wrote about in Animal Movies = Torture: How I Fared Through Evan Almighty, movies featuring animals kill me. Doesn’t matter if there’s a happy ending or not, I can’t sit still to watch them. This weekend Wayne and I went to see I Am Legend. I knew there was a dog in … Continue reading

Dog Halloween Costumes: My Favorites This Year

Handsome Super Murph I love Halloween. I love dressing up, and I love seeing others dressed up. I’d love to dress Murph up, but he only let me do it one time. I never bought him another costume because (a) he truly wasn’t happy (refer to pic below) and I didn’t want to torture him again, and (b) he tore up the costume racing around like a crazy dog in the backyard. No sense wasting money on something he won’t like and will likely destroy. Unhappy Super Murph Darn. Because I always find the cutest costumes I’d just love to … Continue reading

Murphy’s Gatlinburg Getaway Part II: The Smoky Mountain Dog House and Patriot Park

The hotel and Doggywood was the focus of Part I. Part II covers the rest of Murph’s big vacation adventures. The Smoky Mountain Dog House It poured the morning we planned to take Murphy for a hike on one of the only two trails that allowed dogs in the Smoky Mountain National Park. So we decided to do some shopping instead in a place Murph was welcome too: the Smoky Mountain Dog House. (Someplace I found while I was planning our Smoky Mountain getaway.) Me and Murph in front of their big sign. Another sign in front of the store … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Jan 29 – Feb 4

What a week! We said goodbye to January and hello to February. Here’s a breakdown of the hot topics Aimee and myself covered this past week in the Pets Blog. Monday, January 29 I sat down and talked with Sherlockian Author E.J. Wagner and her Dr. Watson, RL (Resident Labrador). Then it became obvious January wasn’t the only thing we were going to bid farewell to last week. In a tender piece recounting his rise to glory and the disease he ultimately could not outrun, Aimee shared how Barbaro’s Journey Ended. Tuesday, January 30 Murphy inspired how to pointers in … Continue reading

How to Bathe a Dog That Hates Baths

In Dog Quirks: The Funny Little Things They Do I shared that one of Murphy’s quirks is that he hates baths. Which is not such a bad thing. Unlike us humans, it’s not good for a dog’s coat to be washed too frequently anyway. However, there are those times when he gets a little ripe and we’re forced to take action. Since he hates showers and baths of any manner, we have limited options. (He weighs about 65 pounds, which is very manageable most times. He is very well behaved and listens to most commands. But at the mention of … Continue reading

Grooming: Drying Your Pet

My dog Moose is in need of a bath. He’s the kind of dog who needs a bath every few months to keep dander down and coat grease-free. He’s generally good in the bath; I’m not worried about the bath itself. What I’m worried about is the aftermath: drying off. While the temperatures outside are above freezing at the moment, it’s still cold enough that I don’t want to take him out to potty when he’s wet. And it tends to take him a few hours to air-dry. The way I see it, I’ve got two options: Bathe him at … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: My Personal Best

I did something today that I’d never done before at the cats-only boarding facility. It was a feat of Olympian proportions: I bathed four cats. Not all at the same time, mind you — that would be a recipe for disaster for sure. We’re approaching full capacity at the boarding facility this weekend; as I type this, we have forty-eight guests. (Between Christmas and New Year’s, we hit sixty-five guests.) So it’s not surprising that we have many guests who have signed up for extras — special treats or grooming services. Generally, we try to schedule a bath for at … Continue reading

How Do Ionic Brushes Work?

Have you seen ads for ionic brushes for pets? They don’t just brush the fur — they can also help reduce pet smells. So how do they work? Ionic brushes break down water molecules in your pet’s coat and release safe levels of ozone into the air. This helps neutralize pet smells. The advantages of an ionic brush: An ionic brush can be used instead of a full bath. Sure, sometimes a bath is necessary, but regular brushing with an ionic brush can help keep pet odors at a minimum. Brushing your pet is a great way to bond! You … Continue reading

Make Bathing Easy: Prep First!

When it’s my turn to do baths at the cats-only boarding facility, the right preparation makes the work a lot easier. Before I even think about fetching a cat into the grooming room, I make sure I’ve set up the hand-held sprayer, towels, shampoo, nail clippers, and blow dryer. You can do the same thing at home to make grooming much easier! What might you need for bathing a pet? Brushes or combs — you can remove a lot of loose hair before the bath with a quick brushing. Tangles and mats can tighten as they dry, so it’s better … Continue reading

Tips for Saving Money on Pet Care

A recent trip to Costco had me taking a good look at how much I spend on my pets compared to how much I spend on myself. I do tend to be more frugal for my own stuff, mostly because I can’t explain WHY to my pets. They don’t know high gas prices or cost of living — they just know it’s time for a treat. Owning pets doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are some tips to help you cut down on your pet spending (without denying your four-legged family members). Shop around for medical procedures. If your … Continue reading
