Hotels Helping You Stretch Your Dollar

With many hotels pushing back check-in time until 4 p.m. and moving up check-out time to 11 a.m., many travelers wonder if they are really getting their money’s worth. After all, if you are spending $250 per night on a room, you’d like to be able to use it for at least 20 hours. Some hotels are cognizant of this complaint, so while they cut back in one area, they try to compensate in others. Competition to snag travelers is heating up, especially with the busy holiday season approaching. Consequently, select properties around the world are offering free amenities to … Continue reading

What to Consider When Getting Another Pet

Room for more? Most pet owners are animal lovers and that often means we want multiple pets. We know, however, that we can’t be pet hoarders; we have to draw the line somewhere. How do we know where that line is? I’m thinking about getting another cat. Cole gets lonely both overnight (cats tend to be nocturnal) and when we are away for long. My dog Chihiro doesn’t play with him as much as she used to. The perfect solution is another feline companion. But how to know if that’s the right thing to do? When thinking about getting an … Continue reading

Most people enjoy celebrating Independence Day. There are barbecues to attend, and fireworks to watch. Unfortunately, those things can cause your pets to feel anxious. This weekend is going to be filled with parades, backyard barbecues, and, of course, fireworks. Many people get a day off of work to relax, spend time with their families, and enjoy some 4th of July celebrations. These types of events can be … Continue reading

Is Age Important When Buying Pet Food?

A recent survey conducted by polling company Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of Iams found that most people consider ingredients the most important factor in what type of food they buy for their pets. The pet’s personal preference was frequently the second most popular factor, followed by price and then recommendations from friends or veterinarians. What’s got many pet websites and news agencies in a tizzy is the least most considered factor when people purchase pet food: age. Not the age of the food, but the age of the pet. Only one in ten people said that the age of … Continue reading

Problem Food for Pets

We’ve always been able to feed our dogs table scraps thinking we were being kind to them. Now we have discovered feeding pets too many table scraps can be no good. This Christmas we encountered a problem. It seems that the off cuts of ham and pork that were fed to one little pooch ended up giving her a case of constipation. Since we had been encountered this once before with our other dog and it turned into a major drama, we were very quick to react. Of course it happened on a public holiday over the Christmas period when … Continue reading

Is A Pet Care Business Right For You?

For those of you who think that pet-sitting or dog walking is a job best left for high schoolers, you may want to think again. Pet care is a home based business that requires very little in the way of start up costs and is always in demand. If you love animals and you know how to care for them, you could start a pet care business. Many people enjoy having companion animals at home. Many of these people also have to go to work. While some pets like cats and guinea pigs are fine with being home all day … Continue reading

Pet Obesity

We hear a lot about human obesity, but what about pet obesity? For me it’s a lot simpler to keep my dog in shape by not feeding her too much than to keep myself in shape and ignore that extra slice of cake. Pet obesity, however, is on the rise in America. MSNBC has the details on a 2009 veterinarian survey revealing that 45% of dogs and 58% of cats nationwide are overweight. I’m definitely surprised by these numbers; I expected lower for dogs. I think it’s easier to make sure my dog gets enough exercise than figuring out how … Continue reading

Another Pet Food Recall

Sadly, it seems that every so often at the pets blog we have to share the news of another pet food recall. We like to make sure we report this important information, but it feels like it’s a topic we have to cover far too often (in my opinion, at all is too much, but at least the companies are being safe in letting us know when there’s a possible contamination). This time around, the Los Angeles Times announces that companies Feline’s Pride, United Pet Group, and Merrick Pet Care are issuing voluntary recalls of some of their products due … Continue reading

When Your Cat Is a Glutton

I’ve got another cat myth to debunk for you: we can trust cats to eat just as much food as they need. The stereotypical image of dogs vs. cats is that dogs guzzle down their food as soon as it’s placed into the bowl, whereas the finicky cat picks at its bowl throughout the day. Once again, that’s simply not the case. Maybe overall cats can be more trusted to graze at their food and only eat what they need, as opposed to often-greedy dogs, but that’s not true across the board. Some of my closest friends own a dog … Continue reading
