Pet Projects: Make a Video, Write a Story, Nominate a Hero

Recently I put together a compilation of cool pet and/or animal related sites that people had shared with me. Below is another compilation of sorts, but these tips were not passed on to me by fellow Families.com members. Instead, these are ones I came across at random and thought you, my fellow pet lovers, would enjoy learning about if you haven’t already stumbled across them yourselves. 2007 ASPCA Humane Awards The ASPCA wants to know who your heroes are –both human and animal. Know a cat or dog who performed a heroic act? What about a law enforcement officer or … Continue reading

A Hero in Dog’s Clothing

A January 26 car accident left Shannon Lorio battered and bloodied. In a remote, wooded area, she lost control of her car on a curve. Her car went off the road and down an embankment, and she was thrown from the car and onto the trunk. She remembers pain, and bleeding, and an enormous presence above her. That presence belongs to a dog now called Hero — a two year old German shepherd who likes to wander. Too many horror movies gave Lorio a moment of panic that the dog was going to eat her; instead, the seventy pound Hero … Continue reading

911 Abuse

As a former television reporter, every once and a while I had the rare opportunity to cover the elusive positive news story. The glitter hearts/puppies/rainbows/unicorn pieces typically manifested themselves in side of the highway births that yielded healthy babies, multi-million dollar lottery winners and EMT saves dog trying to save owner trying to save cat from rushing flood waters. I’ll never forget the … Continue reading

The Strays of Our Lives

I love stories about strays. Why? Because there’s usually a deeper story there. One that proves strays are not just strays, but the strays of our lives who’ve come into them in different forms and for different reasons. You read their soul, they read yours –instantly. That’s a kindred pet spirit connection. Wayne had that with Budly. I loved that little Cocker with my heart and soul but truly him and … Continue reading

Cat Saves Family From Fire

Animal heroes are all around us. The news from Australia brings us the story of Timmy the cat who saved his family from a house fire. In the middle of the night, a forgotten cigarette set a mattress on fire in a family home in Cairns, a town in northern Australia. Timmy woke his owners by pawing and clawing at their faces; the family of four was able to escape unharmed. Fire service officials reported that the home had only minor damage thanks to Timmy’s quick action — and that Timmy was the best smoke alarm system the family could … Continue reading
