In the Company of Dogs Early Holiday 2008 Catalog

In an effort to be more environmentally conscious this year, I opted out of a receiving a lot of my beloved catalogs in the mail. One I could not bear to go without, though, was In the Company of Dogs. I can’t afford hardly anything in it, but oh how I love browsing through it! Yesterday the Early Holiday 2008 catalog arrived. The cover touted over 100 new items. I didn’t pay much mind to that at first…until I realized I was earmarking just about every page. What kind of cool things caught my eye? Glad you asked. Let me … Continue reading

Look at That Cat Grass Grow!

In a recent article, I wrote about how I bought a couple cat grass kits that my mom had pointed out to me. One was for their drinking fountain, the other was a freestanding Kitty Garden. The Aqua Garden The Drinkwell Aqua Garden Pet Grass really surprised me. It’s just a little blue container that clips to the side of the Drinkwell fountain. There’s no soil, just seeds. “Grass is really going to grow in here?” I wondered doubtfully. Oh man, did it! The directions specified a trim of the roots might be needed, but I actually had to cut … Continue reading

A Cat Named Snoopy: Murphy’s Newest Fan Club Member

Murphy’s fan club recently added a new member: a cat named Snoopy. Snoopy’s a little gray tortoise-shell Tabby cat who lives in the neighborhood. She lives near the back of our walking route and is both an indoor and outdoor cat. Snoopy has a sister named Lucy who looks an awful lot like Mr. Meow. The first time I saw her I panicked. I thought Mr. Meow had somehow got out and had made his way to the back of the neighborhood. But upon closer inspection, I realized Lucy’s hair was shorter than Mr. Meow’s and her figure was more … Continue reading

Fall Travel for Frugalistas

The key to saving money while you enjoy a fabulous fall getaway is to visit places that allow you to get the most bang for your buck. For example, if you are planning to take a road trip to pick pumpkins or apples this autumn consider visiting a larger all-inclusive establishment. Some orchards and farms offer you the chance to not only pick your own produce, but also provide hayrides, food samples and access to petting zoos (complete with pigs, chicks, rabbits, sheep, cows, and more) minus the extra charge. Mackey’s Orchard in Belvidere, New Jersey, offers customers a 20-minute … Continue reading

How to Tell If Your Plants Are Drought Damaged

After the heat of the summer, you may feel like wilting. Chances are that your plants are feeling the same way. After all, it’s been very hot and very dry. As you move into the fall, you’ll need to take a look at your plants and evaluate them. Have they been permanently damaged by the drought? Is your plant stressed? Some plants go dormant during the summer months. Grass turns yellow or brown. Although it can be tempting to water these it, this is normal and if the fall brings moisture, grass will tend to recover. Plants can suffer from … Continue reading

Spring Garden Party

For Easter, my 7-year-old daughter received a small terra cotta pot filled with plastic grass, seed packets, a hand rake, some gloves and a bunch of chocolate flowers. The candy is gone, but we’re now anxiously waiting for peppers to sprout from the pot. The cute gift came courtesy of my sister-in-law, and was nice change from the traditional Easter baskets. However, I think it would be equally appropriate to hand out as a favor at a spring garden party. In fact, you could go one better and have young guests decorate the pots with glitter glue, paint, markers, sequins, … Continue reading

More Ideas for Family Bonding

Obviously, organizing a rummage sale is not the only way to strengthen the parent-child bond. In fact, up until yesterday, I wouldn’t have even considered it as an option. However, it just goes to prove that you don’t have to take an expensive vacation or take off an entire week from work in order to make special memories with your son or daughter. If you are looking for easy and affordable ways to connect with your children during the Memorial Day weekend, consider these fun activities: DIY Chia Head: Hand out a Styrofoam or plastic cup to each of your … Continue reading

The Performing / Demonstrating Personality Type

The “Performer / Demonstrating” Personality Type, or the ESFP personality type, describes a person who is an Extrovert (E), who perceives the world through Sensing (S), who relies on their Feelings (F) about the people and circumstances involved in a given situation as a basis for decision making, and who views the world from the vantage point of being open to Perceiving (P) ideas that are brand new, and different from, their own. Visiting Cemeteries

One of my favorite things to do on a sunny spring afternoon is walk through local cemeteries in search of ancestors who are buried there. No, I have not gone insane, nor do I have an infatuation with the dead or morbidity. Cemeteries are actually a very peaceful place to take a walk, and there is information on tombstones that can come in useful for genealogical research. Information that can be found on tombstones includes birth and death information, a woman’s maiden name, parent’s names, town of origin, and military service. You may also discover the nearby grave of an … Continue reading

Foods You Might Not Think of Giving to Dogs

For a while, I was making my own dog food. Check out the basic recipe here if you’re curious. Moose and Lally LOVED it, but it was taking a lot of time, effort, and money to keep it up. Gradually we switched back to dog food, but from time to time I like to supplement their kibbles with some healthy human food. Some of my favorite add-ins are: White or brown rice or oatmeal cooked in chicken broth Shredded lean chicken or turkey Mashed vegetables like carrots, peas, and string beans Plain yogurt (especially when Moose has an upset tummy) … Continue reading
