Moose’s Love Affair with the UPS Man

This love story probably won’t hit the big screen any time soon: dog meets delivery driver. But it’s a love affair I get to watch on a regular basis. My dog Moose loves everyone. He’d happily get into an open car door, wander off with strangers… it doesn’t matter who. He loves everyone. It’s really very sweet. (My other dog, Lally, is much more timid around strangers.) But Moose has a few special people in his life, people he just goes NUTS for. My dad is one of them. The UPS man is another. Our local UPS driver seems to … Continue reading

Madness by Any Other Name is Just as Sweet

A friend of mine just wrote a piece about her dog and The Madness: out of nowhere, the dog will go from inactive to active, running around in circles, making funny noises, and generally being a total goofball. Then just as suddenly, The Madness runs out and the dog is back to her usual quiet self again. Have you experienced this in your pets? Some of my pitbull-loving friends call this “the zoomies”. The dog will go zooming around the house or yard at top speed, often in circles. As soon as the burst of energy is used up, the … Continue reading

Moose and the Stuffy Man

My boxer mix Lally is a ball addict — she’ll chase her squeaky ball all day and when she isn’t playing with it, she’s usually guarding it. On the other paw, we have my shepherd mix Moose. Moose is all that is lazy — he loves to spend the day on the couch… on the bed… on the dog bed… on the nest by the sliding glass door so he can watch the world… you get the idea. But every once in a while, Moose gets that wild hair and wants to play. I can tell he’s feeling playful if … Continue reading

Mud Socks

I keep hearing people talk about how mild the winters are in the Pacific Northwest. We’ve had a share of sub-freezing days (that gave my Moose some trouble with his hips) that made me wonder. At least with the sub-freezing weather, the mud solidified! Over the weekend, though, we had some gorgeous days. The temperature came close to fifty degrees, and the sun poked through the clouds. So I decided that Moose, Lally, and I were long overdue for a trip to the dog park. Less than a mile from the apartment is a fenced in off-leash park with water … Continue reading

Wipey Feet

My dog Lally does a funny little dance after she goes to the bathroom. She scrapes her back feet against the grass: right, right, left, left. I call it “wipey feet” (as opposed to Happy Feet, I guess). The topic came up in one of the dog lover sites I frequent, and nobody had a definitive answer. Why do some dogs wipe their feet after they piddle or poop? No expert in wipe-ology came forward to solve the mystery. All we could do was make some educated guesses. Some folks thought it might be similar to a cat burying messes … Continue reading
