Dog Days of Summer: Pets on Vacation

Pet owners face a unique situation when making our summer travel plans: we have to worry about our pets. Do we only go places where we can take our pets, or do we try to find care for them while we’re away? Website Pet Relocation released its third annual Summer Pet Travel Survey. They found that 70% of the people questioned plan to travel with their pets. If you want to take your animals along with you on vacation this summer, there are a few things you have to consider. Make sure you can bring your animal with you where … Continue reading

How to Find a Vet for Your Exotic Pet

Choosing a vet can be tricky. You want a doc and staff who know their stuff, convenient hours, close to home, fair prices, and more. Maybe you want somebody who remembers your pet’s name, or has a gentle hand, or seems to genuinely love all animals. Choosing a vet can get even trickier if you’re dealing with an exotic pet. It’s a relatively safe bet that any vet you find in the phone book can handle dogs and cats — but can they help your guinea pig? What about your sick fish or lizard? How do you find somebody who … Continue reading

Flying in Style with Pet Airways

A new airline is soaring through the clouds… and people aren’t allowed to ride. Pet Airways is a new service flying cats and dogs across the United States. How it all began: you can blame a little dog named Zoe. Zoe belongs to the owners of Pet Airways. Like many pet owners, they found it challenging to arrange travel with Zoe in the family. If they wanted to fly somewhere, Zoe was a little too big to ride under the seat (some airlines allow pets of a certain size to ride in the cabin). But they didn’t want their furry … Continue reading

Pets without Odors

When I invite a friend over, I go into a bit of a cleaning frenzy. I vacuum and dust and clean the bathroom… but I also brush the couches and pick mud out of the door tracks. I fuss over the various spots that various dogs have left on the carpet, hoping to somehow hide them with clever lighting or furniture movements. The only person who’s ever commented on or obsessed over the smell, however, is me. I have two big dogs and I worry that my apartment is stinky because of them. (I have the same worry about my … Continue reading

Feeling Airsick?

I’m not a very good flier. The slightest bump leaves me clutching the arm rests, heart thudding and sweaty. But one thing I’ve never done is actually needed to use the barf bag in the seat pocket. I do, however, tend to get motion sickness. It’s worse in a car than in a plane, but I still experience some of the symptoms. If you get airsick, here are a few tips to help soothe your stomach (and other body parts). Bring peppermint or ginger candies with you. These are two traditional remedies for an upset stomach that really work! When … Continue reading

Dealing with a Visually Impaired Pet

We recently had a guest at the cats only boarding facility who was missing an eye. In all other respects, he seemed to be a perfectly normal, healthy cat. But it got me thinking. How does an owner work with a visually impaired pet? In the case of this cat, I was very careful not to startle him. I made sure I approached from the side that could see whenever possible — I didn’t want to frighten or upset him or cause any stress. With a pet who has no vision at all, an owner would have to think about … Continue reading

Aquarium Airstone Cleaning

If you’re using an airstone to keep the water moving in your aquarium, you may want to clean it — rather than spend money on a new one when it gets clogged. Cleaning your airstone is relatively easy! What is an airstone? It is any porous material (ceramic, stone, wood, plastic) that is used to diffuse air in your aquarium. Running your air pump through an airstone creates lots of tiny bubbles, rather than a few big bubbles. This can make your filter run more efficiently. Using an airstone also helps improve water circulation through your tank. But fish (as … Continue reading

Cleaning Around Your Pets

I was changing the sheets on my bed when Lally (my boxer/shar-pei mix) decided to help… by jumping into the middle of the bed. I gave her a gentle push off the bed, and she jumped right back up. This is fun! Pets can make even the most routine household chores more entertaining, and more challenging. I feel like my apartment is in a constant state of disarray — simply because of all the hair! Here are some tricks I’ve come up with over the past few years to help keep things clean. Change your sheets every week — especially … Continue reading

The Problem of Selling a House with Pets

First Aimee and her crew decided to move, now it looks like me and my crew will too. Except we’re moving exactly opposite from where Aimee ended up –we’re going back to Jacksonville, Florida. That means selling the house. But before we do that, we have to get the house ready to go on the market. For homeowners with pets (like us), this can present some challenges. People’s Pet Peeves and Phobias Some people do not like to live in houses where pets lived before. The owners who bought our last house demanded we have the carpets cleaned prior to … Continue reading

Stick to ‘Em! How You and Your Pet Can Keep Your 2007 Resolutions

Ah, the New Year. Fresh starts, new beginnings, and resolutions. What’s yours? Lose weight? Get organized? Spend more time with your loved ones? With the second week of the New Year drawing to a close and the third week about to begin, how are those resolutions shaping up? Are you sticking to them? This is about the time enthusiasm starts to wane (if it hasn’t died completely already), Real Life returns with all of its demands, and it’s very easy to find ways not to accomplish your goals. But never … Continue reading
