The Pets Blog Week in Review for February 11-17

Are you wondering what Aimee and I wrote about last week because other matters kept you away from the Pets Blog? If so, you came to the right place. Here’s what we covered on: Monday, February 11 The problem with show dog science is that it’s created a lot of genetic defects which leads to both physical and mental disorders for purebred pets. What’s a girl and her two dogs to do when they finally get a nice day to go outside? Head to dog park of course. But Aimee and her crew came home with souvenirs: mud socks! Tuesday, … Continue reading

Mud Socks

I keep hearing people talk about how mild the winters are in the Pacific Northwest. We’ve had a share of sub-freezing days (that gave my Moose some trouble with his hips) that made me wonder. At least with the sub-freezing weather, the mud solidified! Over the weekend, though, we had some gorgeous days. The temperature came close to fifty degrees, and the sun poked through the clouds. So I decided that Moose, Lally, and I were long overdue for a trip to the dog park. Less than a mile from the apartment is a fenced in off-leash park with water … Continue reading

Organizing School Items

So it’s almost time for back to school. You’ve organized the school supplies. You’ve gotten the back to school clothes, or you’ve dug in the closet to find them. You have it all planned out, or else you’re giggling madly in denial at this post right now. La, la, la – I can’t hear you, you say. Organizing? Back to school? What’s that? On Pinterest lately there have been a number of wonderful little ideas for back to school organizing. One area of our home that gets very messy at the end of the day is the entryway. The entryway … Continue reading

Running on Parents

We’ve just joined our local home learners group, at least the email version of the group. In real life, we’ve created a little nature learners group that meets every Tuesday morning, and many people in the home learners group are coming to that meeting as well. It’s a good way to get to know other people who are around during the day time, or at least interested in doing some common out of the house activities. One of the ways that we’re doing this homeschooling thing cheaply is to focus on activities that involve parents instead of formal classes. Our … Continue reading

The War of the Smells

Ah, spring. When a young dog’s fancy turns to the awakening smells of the world around her (or him). I’ve already had to declare war on mud. People warned me when I moved to the Pacific Northwest that it would be rainy and it would be muddy. The rain, I can handle. I’ve got a knee-length waterproof coat with a deep hood and plenty of pockets for poo bags. But Moose, Lally, and I track in lots of mud. These days, the war on mud is mostly under control. I’m now the proud owner of TWO vacuums — one small, … Continue reading

Sadie

It was a gorgeous sunny day yesterday, and I decided to take my dogs to the nearest dog park. We have a great dog park here in Wilsonville, Oregon — it’s a gigantic fenced in area, shielded from view by a line of trees (so the dogs aren’t seeing cars/walkers/kids playing soccer/etc). There were some great dogs at the park yesterday, too. Two puppies who tumbled all over each other playing. A dignified old Scottie dog who just watched the crazy kids running around. A boxer and a poodle mix who raced around chasing balls. And Sadie. Sadie caught my … Continue reading

What to Do with Old Toothbrushes

Hate to throw anything away? You’ll love these ways to reuse old toothbrushes. Some of these ideas are very practical, while others are pretty funky. Enjoy! We go through a lot of manual toothbrushes in our household. My husband, especially, is very hard on toothbrushes. After a few uses, his toothbrush resembles a porcupine having a bad hair day. I do like to save a couple of the old toothbrushes for cleaning around the house. In fact, old toothbrushes can be used for cleaning lots of things, such as: Window screens The area around faucets. Hard water spots and soap … Continue reading
