Do You Have a Pet Emergency Evacuation Plan?

The spooky incident with my neighbor’s fire yesterday got me to thinking about emergency evacuation plans. Namely, how I don’t have one. Which was something I’d never really considered before. Have you? Sure, I had thought about how to help Murph and the cats if I wasn’t there by posting an I.C.E sticker. But I’d never really considered what I’d do if I was there during the emergency. For some, like my neighbor Cindy, the question isn’t a hypothetical one. She’s got real-life experience in two types of scenarios. One where the danger was imminent and another where it’s urgent … Continue reading

When Disasters Affect Animals: California’s Wildfires

Yesterday Wayne Pacelle, the President and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, sent out an email updating HSUS supporters about the wildfires in California. Animals Affected His email painted a dire picture of the firestorms sweeping the southern portions of the state that rapidly caused hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. We’re talking homes of every sort, from ones in subdivisions to ones on farm and ranch lands, modest abodes to ones owned by celebrities. This means that domestic pets as well as wildlife and livestock are in peril. “Some areas hardest hit by these fires … Continue reading

Squirrel Appreciation Week: Remembering Rudy First

Earlier this year I wrote about how what you think about grows and how thoughts attract things. In that case it was how Murph must think about nice people and pets because he always seems to attract them. But it’s happened to me before too. In honor of Squirrel Appreciation Week, I thought I’d share the tale of Rudy First. The Fall Shortly before the bands of Hurricane Frances wreaked havoc on the neighborhood where we lived in Jacksonville, a funny thing happened. I kept hearing people tell stories about seeing baby squirrels or coming across them somehow. I lamented … Continue reading

Happy Monday! With the passing of Labor Day, the inevitable end of summer is drawing yet nearer. Maybe you were busy last week taking a late summer vacation, or perhaps you were adjusting to the back-to-school grind, and missed portions of the Pets Blog. Never fear, Aimee and I are here with a review of what we wrote on: Monday, September 3 Ah, Labor Day. Ever since 1999 I’ve never viewed them quite the same. Then came the summer of 2004, where Murphy and Kitty and a hurricane name Frances had a lot of fun. Tuesday, September 4 In memory … Continue reading

Murphy and Kitty and a Hurricane Named Frances

Just as September always reminds me of hurricanes, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to spend another Labor Day Weekend without remembering Labor Day 2004. Lights Out, Uh Huh, Dance, Dance, Dance! At one p.m. on Labor Day 2004 the electricity went out. It would not come back on for another three and a half days. I was napping on the couch, and I think Wayne was too, when the commotion started. Sirens, to be exact. We woke to see neighbors running up the street. We went out to investigate the brew ha-ha and learned a branch had fallen … Continue reading
