The Animals Grandma Dorothy Introduced Me To

The last few days I’ve been thinking about my mom a lot. I think it’s because of all that I’ve gone through with Murphy lately. I remember how Murphy was always on my mom’s mind. She thought the world of him. Now with him in his cast and his cone head, I can’t help but think of how she’d react if she was here to see him. She’d be so upset he was going through all this, but she’d also love on him and cater to his every need. I guess in some respects she’d return the therapy he gave … Continue reading

Middle-Aged Women and Stroke

According to the American Stroke Association, more than one hundred thousand women in the United States under the age of sixty-five have a stroke each year. Compare that to the approximately 83,000 American women who suffer a heart attack! Most strokes occur when a clot blocks blood flow to the brain. There is another type of stroke that is comparably rare — a blood vessel in the brain bursting. If you’re going to worry about stroke (and you should), focus your worry on those clots. More statistics from the American Stroke Association: Stroke risk is highest in women between the … Continue reading

The End of the Personal Pet Therapy Project

It’s with a heavy heart that my first blog back after a lengthy absence is to report that the Personal Pet Therapy Project came to an end on Thursday, July 3 when my mom (a.k.a. Grandma Dorothy to Murphy, Mr. Meow, and Tabby) passed away. The Gift That Proved Significant Since the last month has been pretty chaotic and filled with emotional upheaval, I wasn’t able to chronicle some stuff. Such as, that the little stuffed heart Tabby kept bringing my mom was a most significant gift indeed. My mom’s last oncologist appointment on June 11 proved to be The … Continue reading

A Significant Gift?

Because I suspect Tabby’s behavior was a harbinger of my mom’s stroke, I’ve been watching her more carefully these days. If she’s more cuddly with my mom than usual, or more vocal, I monitor my mom’s every move like you wouldn’t believe. I’ve experienced too many times now when one or the other of my pets is trying to tell me something. I try to pay attention now! That’s why I didn’t know what to make of Tabby’s latest gesture. Still don’t actually. Wayne thinks I’m reading too much into it, but I think it’s significant. Gifting You know how … Continue reading

How Wayne Welcomed His Mother-in-Law

Michele left a comment on the article I wrote about bringing my mom home with me to the effect “but at least you can take consolation in the fact that you have a great partner in Wayne.” She might have said this because in my article I explained how he was the one who first proposed bringing my mom to live with us before I even had a chance to ask him about it. A truer statement has never been made. Wayne is an amazing partner. And I think that’s such a key word. We are truly a team. We … Continue reading

New Year’s Day: Do You Feel Any Different?

Do you feel any different now that it’s officially 2007? I cannot believe it. Looking back, I remember teasing my oldest daughter that she would be graduating from high school in 2008. I told her how we used to come up with slogans when I was a kid for the year we’d graduate and said hers would be an easy year to give a slogan, “2008 is great!” That was about 11 years ago, you know, way back in the 1990’s. Now, she will be graduating next year and I just don’t know where the time went! It seems like … Continue reading
