Cast Off Day!

We woke to much anticipation and excitement in our house this morning. After eight weeks, today Murph was set to get his cast off. I woke up early so I could get him to the surgeon’s office a little after 7:30 a.m. But before we left, I lay on the floor with him and petted his belly. “I need you to be a brave boy for me one more time, okay? Today I have to drop you off at the vet’s because they have to give you the sleepy medicine again to get your cast off. I know you don’t … Continue reading

Hot Days (and Hot Dogs) Ahead

The temperature yesterday was in the 70s in the Portland, Oregon area. By tomorrow, forecasts are calling for temperatures in the 90s! It looks to me like summer is coming… and coming fast. Dealing with the heat is somewhat easier for people than for pets. After all, we have thumbs for turning on the air conditioning… or the option of escaping to a cool, dark movie theater when the sun is too much. Some dogs do love the sun and heat, though. My brother’s American Staffordshire Terrier Lily Biscuits just loves sunshine. She’ll sprawl out on the warm concrete sidewalk … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Apr 30 – May 6

Good morning, Families.com! Last week we bid farewell to April and Hello! to May. As usual, here’s the recap of what Aimee and myself wrote about. Monday, April 30 “Aimee? Courtney? Where are you girls?” Day off! Aimee had lots of preps underway for her upcoming cross-country moving trek. (See under May 2 for more on that.) I had family in town leaving that day. We got back on track Tuesday, though… Tuesday, May 1 When I was growing up I was taught to leave a basket of flowers on a neighbor’s door to celebrate May Day. But I decided … Continue reading

What’s the Spookiest Thing That’s Happened to You on Halloween?

Happy Halloween! I don’t know if it’s the kid in me or what, but Halloween remains one of my favorite holidays. I love decorating and dressing up even though I don’t have any kids and some may think I’m too old for such nonsense. But I don’t care. I still think it’s a hoot. However, this Halloween, even though the decorations are up, I find myself facing something very scary indeed. A trip to the doctor. Dreading the Doctor After having to schlep my mom to and from doctors’ offices this past year, I’ve semi-sort of conquered one fear in … Continue reading

Murphy’s Surprise Visitor

Back in the middle of September, Murphy got a big treat: a visit from his Aunt Karen and Uncle Michael, who are the parents of his best friend, Tucker. Karen and Michael are pet photographers and were on their way up to Indianapolis for their yearly fall shoot. I knew they were planning on making a stop here then, so of course I passed that on to Murph. By the time they pulled in he was waiting anxiously at the door. But Karen emailed me this past Tuesday morning and said they were heading back to Jax that day and … Continue reading
