Big Amusement Park Fun for a Little Bit of Money

Visiting Mickey Mouse and friends or Bugs Bunny and pals can put a real dent in the family budget. Fortunately, the United States is peppered with smaller, family-owned amusement parks that give cash-strapped parents more bang for their buck. If the struggling economy has forced you to cancel a summer trip to a major theme park this summer, then consider salvaging the season for your kids by taking them to one of the following smaller amusement parks that offer cheaper admission, lower ticket prices, and shorter lines: WISCONSIN Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay, Wisconsin is my family’s favorite … Continue reading

Take an Earth Day Safari or Barbecue in Uruguay

Nairobi tour operators are hoping travelers who want to embark on green vacations to celebrate Earth Day 2008 will consider visiting Kenya. Game parks there used to draw thousands of safari loving adventure seekers each year, but ever since the region was marred with violence following a post-election crisis visitors have been reluctant to tour local conservations parks. That means Kenya’s rich wildlife, from its rhinos to whale sharks, is now at risk unless the country can regain visitors. According to local officials, the deaths of more than 1,000 people due to riots and ethnic clashes prompted tour operators to … Continue reading

How We Celebrated Murphy’s Sixth Birthday

Photo By Arif Budiman Yesterday marked the sixth year anniversary of when Murph picked us out at the animal control shelter and we broke down and brought him home. Since we don’t know when Murph’s true birthday is, this is the one we go by. And since Murph’s birthday marks the end of the Team Pryor September Celebration Extravaganza, we had to wrap it up right. Double Parkin’ It Murph loves to take walks and go for rides, and if you combine those with a trip to the park…wow. That’s a big day in Murph’s world. After we did our … Continue reading

Murphy’s May Day Morning Walk

We’re having well above average temps here in Nashville again lately. It feels more like the middle of summer than early spring. Today is supposed to reach 88 degrees. (If not 90.) On Tuesday nights I play volleyball at Centennial Park, which means Murph’s regular afternoon walks are both earlier and shorter than normal. Since it’s going to be so hot when I have to take him, and because we had company in town the last week and some of his walks were abbreviated then, and because today is May Day, I decided to spoil Murph and celebrate the day … Continue reading

Taking a Holiday Break?

NO. We seldom take holiday breaks. All of my friend’s kids and my kid’s friends are home for the holidays. Therefore, there is no schoolwork, no homework, no work, period. This is not true for us. Since we take breaks whenever we need to, we do not follow the public school calendar. We homeschool every chance we get. Today, my son is working on writing exercises for the book he is reading, and my daughter is working on math. Then we will go to the chiropractor for my back, (while my 12-year-old son plans to stay home, as he does … Continue reading

My Day At Bark In The Park

Saturday couldn’t have been a more perfect day for baseball… and dogs! It was Bark in the Park day at the Lakewood Blueclaws minor league baseball stadium in Lakewood, New Jersey. The day was sunny and nearly cloudless. Temperatures in the low 70s, but the sun made it feel warmer. Let’s be honest here: I was in Aimee’s Personal Heaven. Sunny day, stretching out in the grass, dogs all around, and a fun minor league baseball game. I thought long and hard about my dogs, and whether or not they would enjoy a day at the stadium. Lally, my somewhat … Continue reading

Establishing Summer Rules

It was one of those very rare Monday mornings where everyone got out the door on time. Perhaps the motivation lies in just getting this week done and over with, since it is the last week of school for my children. So I took advantage of the leisurely drive to school, before iPods could be stuck in ears, to discuss summer rules. Things got a bit out of hand last summer and I don’t know how it happened. Perhaps it was because I bent on rules to a point where I then lost control. All I know is that for … Continue reading

It’s Family Reunion Planning Time

Even though we got some fresh snow here yesterday, I keep telling myself that spring is almost here. Spring is a good time to get started on planning a family reunion if you would like to have one this summer. Summer is a popular time for family reunions for a few reasons including nice weather, vacation time, and the opportunity to have the reunion at fun (and low cost) venues like a park or beach. With this in mind, I have collected a few ideas for fun family reunion activities. Perhaps they will whet your appetite for a reunion and … Continue reading

Aquarium

I have written many times about how much I love my moms’ group. I have made the best friends and have friends for my toddler through them. My moms’ group hosts the best events. Many of the events are educational and I get continuing education credits for foster parenting. The last event was a trip to tour the new Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park in Dallas. I was so excited about this because I had wanted to go to the aquarium. Even better, the aquarium had been completely renovated to be more child friendly. I knew Jessie would enjoy the … Continue reading
