The Pets Blog Week in Review for Apr 2-8

It’s that time again: time to catch up on what you might have missed last week in the Pets Blog. Below is a daily breakdown of what Aimee and I covered: Monday, April 2 Poor Aimee had to endure a Moose on her head at 2 a.m. thanks to Nights of Thunder Tuesday, April 3 There was no joy in Kittentown when it came to Aimee’s friend’s spayed kitten Zoe and the “creative diapering” they partook in to keep her from licking her stitches. In honor of April being Pet First Aid Awareness Month, we gave you a list of … Continue reading

Spring Proofing Your Pet: Thunderstorms

Photo by Vickie Matthews I love spring, but Tuesday night I was reminded of what else comes with it besides longer hours of daylight, pretty flowers, and nicer weather: storms. We had a pretty severe storm roll through complete with tornado warnings, lightning, thunder, and pounding rain. This was my first experience with Tabby in a storm situation. She was perfectly fine. However, perhaps you read Aimee’s account of her nights of thunder with her dog Moose. Like Moose, Murphy and Kitty do not like thunderstorms either. Murphy happens to be one of those dogs who can sense a storm … Continue reading

Nights of Thunder

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 o’clock in the morning, I was awakened by a big fat shepherd mix stepping on my head. Let me tell you — that gets me up rather quickly. Not necessarily alert, but at least I was awake. Moose was having a crisis, and I quickly figured out why — we were having a thunderstorm, complete with flashes of lightning and super loud kabooms overhead. My big fat shepherd, you see, is a big fat chicken. Normally, when he hears something that scares him, he goes to hide under the desk where I do my … Continue reading

Toddler-Friendly Fourth of July

Not all toddlers embrace Independence Day events as enthusiastically as their older siblings.  Late nights, thunderous fireworks displays and way too many sugary snacks can lead to epic meltdowns. In order to celebrate the holiday without sending your tot over the edge, consider these low-key, yet festive Fourth of July activities: Fireworks in a Glass    Fill a tall glass with warm water.  Next, add a little cooking oil to the water.  Depending on the size of your container, one to two tablespoons should suffice.  Then, add a few drops of food coloring to the oil and water.  Gently stir the … Continue reading

Disney Christmas Day Parade Filming Dates

Big news first: I know the filming dates for the 2012 Disney-ABC Christmas Day Parade. This is an elusive event where the tickets go on sale and sell out almost immediately. This year I have an inside line on the taping; the daughter of a friend of mine is going to dance in the parade. They’re taping the last week of November/the first weekend in December. The big day should be Saturday, December 1. I couldn’t verify this information online, because Disney hasn’t posted anything official about it yet. They probably won’t until November. But I can guarantee that the … Continue reading

Plenty of Special Needs Proms Happening This Year

Last year, at around this time, I noticed that there were a lot of high schools that were holding special needs proms. This year, this lovely trend is continuing. In addition to proms that are specifically for teenagers and young adults who have special needs, there seems to be more acceptance of high schoolers with special needs attending the official school prom. Here are a few stories about proms from this year. In Houston, Texas, eighteen year old Amber House did not think she would be going to her prom. Amber has Down Syndrome, and plenty of friends. Her parents … Continue reading

“Psychic” Pets

A recent poll reported by Newser.com and conducted by The Associated Press and Petside.com concluded that many American pet owners believe that their pets are psychic or have a sixth sense on some level. The actual details vary depending on what questions people were asked. According to the poll, 2/3 of American pet owners believe that animals have a sixth sense about bad weather, and 43% of the people polled say their pets can predict bad news. Owners of both cats and dogs claimed that their feline or canine pets warned them either about poor weather or upcoming bad news. … Continue reading

Maintaining a Tight Ship in Homeschool Waters

Any endeavor that requires organization and a scheduling on a regular basis can be fragile if left to the device of a flawed human. Homeschooling is one such endeavor which can turn from calm sunny skies to a thunderstorm with little warning. It happens in every homeschool family at one time or another. A state of chaos should be the exception and not the rule. If you are living in a chaotic homeschool situation it will frustrate everyone involved and that is does not make for a proper educational atmosphere. Homeschooling is busy, crazy, fun, exhausting, amazing, and full of … Continue reading

Missing Grandma Dorothy

When my mom first came to live with us, I don’t think Murphy, Mr. Meow or Tabby knew what to make of it all. They knew who Grandma Dorothy was, but she lived somewhere else. That meant she’d come and stay a little while and then leave. But this time she came with two big suitcases, unpacked, and stayed. She left for a few days when the ambulance came after her first mini-stroke. But then she came back again…though not entirely herself. Still, Grandma Dorothy was like another stray I’d brought home. Murph and the cats accepted her, loved her, … Continue reading
