Compounding Pet Medications: Is It Safe?

It can be tricky getting them to take their meds One of the latest health scares has been over a strain of meningitis that’s killed multiple people. According to WebMD, the meningitis originates from a compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts. Compounding is the practice of putting more than one type of medication in a pill, or basically changing the medication in some way from its original formula. How is this relevant for the pet owner? Compounding is a common practice in pet medications. Before you worry: the meningitis came from a human medication for back pain and it seems the authorities … Continue reading

Pet Insurance

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about pet insurance. Maybe because of all the money we’ve had to fork out for Murphy’s paw surgery. Except, I’m not sure if pet insurance would have covered it. I’m not that well versed in the various pet insurance policies out there. But I keep seeing them advertised, so I thought I’d check into it a bit more. Besides, it makes a great article for the Pets Blog! Types of Pet Insurance Policies Who has them and where can you get them? Why Petco Is Where I Go (Now)

A few years ago, when my friends adopted their wiggle-pup Casey, I scrambled for a good gift. I didn’t know what kind of treats the puppy would like, and they’d already shopped for toys, a crate, a bed, and food. In the end, I went with a Petco gift card. Since then, I’ve been on the Petco mailing list. Most of the time (let’s say 99 out of a hundred) I brush past the emails and don’t pay much attention. A recent mailing caught my eye: sale on Frontline. What perfect timing! I was out of Frontline, it was nearly … Continue reading

Why Veterinary Prices Might Go Up

One thing I really struggle with is vet prices. I don’t actually have problems paying our veterinary bills, but I want to be a smart consumer and thus want to know if my visit was reasonably priced. When I first adopted Chihiro and Cole I took them to a low-cost clinic. After a checkup and any necessary shots I paid somewhere in the $50-$65 range. I became disillusioned with the clinic for reasons I’ve expounded on before and started going to a veterinary hospital. Checkup and shot visits there cost around $90. I don’t mind paying $40 extra if that’s … Continue reading

Intestinal Parasites: Worms

I’ve got the creeps just thinking about it — all the different types of worms that can infest a dog or cat’s intestines. Yuck! But keeping your pet safe from worms is a real part of pet ownership. When you bring your pet in for an annual exam, you usually have to bring a stool sample. Two types of worms — roundworms and tapeworms — can be seen in feces with the naked eye. Other worms are too small to be seen without a microscope. So don’t forget to bring that sample along! If your pet has worms, the eggs … Continue reading

What to do with all of your holiday digital photos

Did you take a lot of digital photos over this past holiday season? I did, and if you are like me, it’s easy to dump the pictures to your hard drive and then not do anything with them. I have hundreds of digital photos spanning birthdays to graduations to family vacations that sit untouched on my computer. Well, I’m going to change that this year and I want to pass on a few ways to handle your growing digital picture library. ● Organize your photos. I hate spending 30 minutes looking through folders of unnamed pictures to find the picture … Continue reading
