Pet Tattoos

I was paging through a recent edition of BARK magazine and couldn’t help but notice a feature article about pet tattoos. Not tattoos FOR pets — people who get tattoos of their pets. It seems that there are lots of people out there choosing to get a tattoo to memorialize a lost pet, or just express love for a current pet. The article had pictures of a variety of styles, from full color portrait to cartoonish puppies playing. There was even a cute one of a stick-figure human with a ponytail chasing after a stick-figure dog. I also liked one … Continue reading

The Trick Behind Halloween Treats

Depending on where you are collecting candy on Halloween, the free items can be more trick than treat. One word: Raisins. Dehydrated grapes that look more at home in the bottom of a toilet rather than the bottom of a plastic pumpkin shouldn’t be considered a Halloween treat. Ditto for toothbrushes, individual pennies, polished rocks and the errant canned good. Rocks, canned soup and raisins. Really? Who does that to a child on Halloween? Geez, the kid went through the trouble of dressing-up, braving chilly temps and navigating around mountains of fallen leaves in the dark. Doesn’t that warrant at … Continue reading

Super Cool Birthday Party Ideas for Your 5 Year Old, Part 2

Dress-Up or Makeover Party: Would a pink festival of femininity capture your little fashionista’s heart? Girls can put on their best dress up clothes and head over to hair and make up for a complete transformation. Your hair and make up area can include painting nails, applying lip gloss and simple hair styles. Makeovers do not have to be extravagant. I find keeping it simple is best. You can suggest the girls arrive in their dress up clothes or provide an array of clothing for them. Roll out red bulletin board paper or a red bed sheet if you want … Continue reading

Ways to Avoid the Halloween Sugar Rush

(All treat, no trick!) My daughter was just over a year old when she went trick-or-treating for the first time. We took her out at my mom’s insistence. Grandma dropped 50 bucks to dress her first-born grandkid in a Disney Dalmatian costume, and by gosh the neighbors were going to get an eyeful of cuteness whether they wanted to or not. Given my daughter’s very young age, clearly our goal was not to score as many sweets as possible. In fact, when one neighbor handed my costumed child an individual tub of Play-Doh, I nearly shed a tear. Finally, a … Continue reading

Parents Who Don’t Give Out Candy on Halloween

I’m not referring to curmudgeonly Mr. Wilson who thinks Halloween is just another way to get scammed by neighborhood rugrats. Nor am I referring to parents who are opposed to the holiday all together and prefer to celebrate All Saints Day with their children instead. I am referring to parents such as my neighbor whose son is diabetic. Each year she hangs an “Ask Me For Non-Sugar Treats” poster on her front door (you can download a poster at the Institute for Applied Biomedicine’s website) and offers a slew of alternative treats to kids who prefer something other than traditional … Continue reading

Henna Allergy Warning

As a part of her baby shower, a good friend of mine had her hands and feet painted with henna. The henna artist told us that it was traditional to paint the hands and feet of the expecting mother as a reminder that she shouldn’t be on her feet or working. She should be resting, and letting others take care of her. Henna is a lovely, natural, and temporary alternative to more permanent body decorations (like piercings and tattoos). But the American Academy of Dermatology has issued a warning about certain types of henna used in temporary tattoos. Natural (or … Continue reading

I Just Don’t Get It

No matter how much I expose myself to the trappings of Tinseltown I will never understand what goes on in the minds of celebrities. Case in point: Mariah Carey’s quickie seaside nuptials to Nick Cannon. The pair got hitched in the Bahamas last week after dating for less than two months. That in and of itself is not that shocking. In fact, it’s par for the course for most star couples. Heck, if you have a Bahamian estate to escape to and the money to fly in a dozen or so of your closest family members and friends you might … Continue reading

2008 Oscar Fashion

Did you honestly think I would overlook this year’s fashion at the Academy Awards? I definitely had some opinions about the outfits, although I must say the guys for the most part were well dressed but dull. Even Johnny Depp looked normal! For the women, I must say that I didn’t really like Marion Cotillard’s dress. Yes, it was kind of pretty, but didn’t you think it made her look a bit like a mermaid with all the scales? Okay, okay, I know, she is French; she innately knows more about fashion than I do. Moving on, I thought Jennifer … Continue reading

Juicy Hollywood Gossip: September 22, 2007

Viggo Mortensen…Russian Mobster? No, actor Viggo Mortensen is not a Russian mobster, but he plays one in his new movie Eastern Promises. He had to spend four hours in the makeup chair so the specialist could apply tattoos similar to those worn by real Russian mobsters. Mortensen himself traveled through Russia, meeting with Mafia bosses to study the tattoo art in order to make his character look authentic. And it worked! While visiting a London pub after filming, Mortensen noticed some Russian youths looking nervously at his hands. He said, “They were looking at my hands and suddenly stopped talking. … Continue reading

How To Dress Like A Rapper and How One Rapper Is Trying To Dress LESS Like One

You’ve seen them at the mall, on the streets, in parks, and in restaurants… I’m talking about those kids who model the rapper-inspired baggy jeans with waistbands that hit around mid-knee, flashy chain-link necklaces that hit around mid-navel, and baseball caps tilted in angles that defy gravity. One fashion maven described the look as the “scourge of the Earth.” I just consider it a trend and pray my own children will have the good sense not to dare don such an outfit in front of me. I’m not fond of the look, but I happened to be at Sam’s Club … Continue reading
