How Much Does Your Pet Influence Your Lifestyle?

A week or two ago, I saw a story on Today about people who take their pets to work. I didn’t catch the full story, however. I think it was really more about how much pets influence some people’s lives. All aspects of it. Work One of the men profiled in the Today piece explained how he had moved his workplace for his dog. Apparently he runs his own business and leases office space. When a landlord prohibited pets from being in the building, the man went and found more accommodating office space elsewhere. But other people who didn’t own … Continue reading

Murphy’s Gatlinburg Getaway Part I: The Holiday Inn and Doggywood

I’m so glad I took the time to plan Murphy’s Smoky Mountain getaway. We were pretty much prepared for what to expect while traveling with a dog in the Smoky Mountains, but we also lucked out a little too. Everywhere we took him held surprises! Our Accommodations: The Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort I decided to book us into the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort instead of renting a cabin. For one thing the price was more affordable, but also we didn’t have to worry about driving back and forth from a cabin into town. We could walk to Gatlinburg’s main thoroughfare … Continue reading

Planning Murphy’s Smoky Mountain Getaway

Photo by Don Wang Not counting the family Christmas road trip all of us –even Mr. Meow–took back in 2005 to Denver, the week we spent looking for houses in March of 2005 when we were moving from Jacksonville to Nashville, or last Labor Day weekend when we made a quick trip down to Jacksonville for a couple of days, we haven’t gotten away for a true vacation to somewhere we’ve never been since we went to Charleston in 2003. Well, we’re finally going to take a few days and head up to Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains. A neighbor … Continue reading

DogFriendly.com: Dog-Friendly Vacation Planning Made Easier

This week, May 12-20, is National Tourism Week sponsored by the Travel Industry Association. It’s a good time to have such a week, as summer’s right around the corner and summer vacations are topmost on many people’s minds. I know vacation is on my mind. Wayne and I don’t always get to go on one each year, but I like to have a list of places where Murph would be welcome to come with us if we could get away. (A few times we’ve taken non-Murph vacations and kenneled him, but that can get expensive. Cheaper just to take him … Continue reading

Disney News: The Spaceship Earth & A Green Disney

Disney World needs to clean up its act, or at least that’s what the Center for Health, Environment and Justice believes. They have launched a campaign to persuade Disney to change the type of cleaning products they use. The goal of the campaign is to encourage Disney to use their mega-watt image as a tourism industry leader and make them an environmentally responsible one. Certified Green Cleaning Products Disney uses non-toxic cleaners at the Animal Kingdom in order to protect the animals, but they do not use similar products at the rest of their parks. Disney believes that all their … Continue reading

Dogs In Bars?

Washington State is considering legislation that would allow dogs to join their owners in bars and restaurants with liquor licenses. The bill — proposed by Senator Ken Jacobsen — would give bars and restaurants the option to allow dogs to join their owners, provided the dogs stay leashed at all times. Jacobsen got the idea in downtown Olympia, when he saw dogs waiting outside a local pub on a cold, rainy day. His thinking was that if people can bring dogs into hotels and stores, why not bars and restaurants? On the one hand, I really like this idea. I … Continue reading
