My Favorite Pet Blogs from the Past Year

Below is a list of my favorite articles I wrote during the past year, often with an explanation of what made them memorable. Five Non-Cash Ways to Help Animals/Shelters this Holiday Season: This was my first article to have a comment left on it. Is It Ever Okay to Kick a Dog?: This was my first article to ever get stars. The BMK Fund: This practice is very near and dear to my heart and it was neat to have a platform such as blogging for Families.com to share it on. The Pets Blog Week in Review for Oct 15-21

October’s speeding along at a frightfully fast pace. Before you know it Halloween will be here. If you’re having a heck of a time keeping up on everything, including the Pets Blog, let me be of some assistance with this week’s Week in Review. Here’s what Aimee and I covered on: Monday, October 15 Aimee’s been doing a good job covering all things fish this month. Today’s installment was More Common Freshwater Diseases. I reported on the dog days festival that Murph, Wayne, and I went to. Tuesday, October 16 Aimee explained that cloudy aquarium water is not normal and … Continue reading

Pooper Scoopers: From Frugal to Fancy

Recently I had to break down and buy something to scoop up Murph’s poop with. Normally I use grocery sacks for poop sacks, but because of our impending move I haven’t been shopping at the grocery store much. The following list covers more of the portable variety of pooper scoopers. (The kind you’d carry along with you on a walk, as opposed to scoopers you might keep for yard “doo”ty.) Frugal End • Free: Plastic sacks from the grocery store. These are my preferred sack of choice because they are free. They’re not always ideal, as sometimes they have holes … Continue reading

Punishing the Crimes and Misdemeanors of Poop Offenders

Earlier this month Aimee wrote an article entitled The Pick-Up Police. I loved it. Mostly because for a long while now I’ve been experiencing the same frustration in my neighborhood. (Other dog owners not picking up after their dogs.) Another thing I particularly liked in Aimee’s article was her proactive approach for finding ways to encourage people to pick up after their dogs. Some were cheeky suggestions, sure, but then again…she just might be on to something. The one I can’t get out of my mind is her skewer suggestion. “I’ve thought about buying a pack of kebab skewers and … Continue reading

The Pick-Up Police

Sometimes, I feel like I’m the only person in my apartment complex who bothers to pick up after my dogs. Straying from the paved paths is like walking through a field of doggy doo landmines. Sometimes even the paths aren’t safe! To be honest, I’m not sure what I can do to get people to pick up after their pets. I’ve come up with a few ideas: There are four doggy bag depots around the complex. Maybe more would help? Leave extra bags at the entrance to each unit. I’ve tried tying spare baggies to the railings so they would … Continue reading

Go Green with Your Pets

In honor of St. Patty’s Day yesterday, I looked at some ways to make your home a little more “green” — environmentally friendly — and how it can benefit your health. Now let’s look at a few ways to go green with your four-legged friends! Deal with pet waste naturally. Try flushable bags for picking up after your dogs on walks — flushing is best because it keeps bags and pet waste out of landfills and prevents soil and water contamination that comes with leaving doggy doo where it falls. If you don’t want to carry the waste to the … Continue reading

Lawn Guardians and R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Earlier I wrote about my nemesis neighbor, Mr. LG. Since he’s spawned two blogs today, you can see I’m pretty worked up about him. It’s All About Respect In my years of walking a dog, I have encountered situations like this where people don’t want my dog on their lawn. Even though I always make sure to pick up any Murphy droppings, some people just don’t want a dog pooping in their yard period. Some have been nicer than others about making their requests, but no matter how they ask, I always respect them. It is their yard after all. … Continue reading

Prevening Worms in Pets

Worms can be dangerous to pets and to people. Here are some things you can do to protect your pets and your family. Remove feces from the litter box and/or the yard regularly. Dog poop should be cleaned out of the yard at least once every week. Follow instructions on your cat litter for litter box cleaning, but it’s best not to let feces sit for too long. (At the cats only boarding facility, we change the litter box twice every day for each cat, but we’re pretty fanatical about cleaning!) Keep a close eye on your child’s sandbox — … Continue reading

How To Pick the Purrfect Litter Box

I guess I’ve got a bit of a poop theme going this week. Earlier I wrote about the different kind of pooper scoopers, which applied more to the dog walking set of Families.com readers. But what if you belong to the cat crowd? Well, I also recently had to buy a new litter box for Tabby. The experience made me realize not all litter boxes are created equal. Your Cat’s Needs Obviously your cat needs a place to “go” when the urge hits, but which box will suit your cat best? Here are some things to consider for their comfort: … Continue reading
