Puppy Bowl IV Play-by-Play

Did you catch any of Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl IV? The last couple of years I’ve usually only been able to watch part of it. But this year Wayne had some work to do, so I planted myself in front of the TV with a project of my own (folding buckets-worth of laundry) and watched even more than usual. Player Introductions Somehow I managed to miss most of this both times I was able to catch the start of the show. I liked how they introduced them by name, breed, age, and with a description of something about them. For … Continue reading

Welcoming Puppy: Throwing a Shower

Since October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, perhaps you’ve decided to do that –welcome a dog into your family. Getting a new dog, be it a puppy or adult, is an exciting occasion. One worth celebrating. Why not do just that by throwing a puppy shower? What a Puppy Shower Is If you’ve ever attended (or maybe planned) a wedding or baby shower, it’s the same thing, just applied to a pet. It can be as elaborate an affair as you want, or you can keep it small and intimate. You can also invite other dogs to your party … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Sept 17–23

We bade adieu to summer and Bienvenue! to Fall last week, but that wasn’t all. What else did Aimee and I write about? If you happened to miss a day or two, here’s your handy dandy WIR to catch you up. Monday, September 17 There’s a difference between a good pet owner and a bad one. For example, responsible owners can prevent attacks. There’s also a difference between being a good animal loving citizen and a bad one. Regrettably and shamefully I confess I was the latter and did nothing to save a dead dog walking. Tuesday, September 18 I … Continue reading

Showering Puppy with Gifts: Options Galore

Looking for a unique gift to welcome a new pup into your home? Or maybe you’re like me and like to give new puppy shower gifts. In the last year I’ve had three friends get new puppies. The most recent was just a couple of weeks ago when our good friends Lee and Brenda welcomed Mochachino, a Boxer, into their lives. Mochachino Longstreth. Photo provided by her mom, Brenda Longstreth Well, that meant it was time for me to hit the stores and find her just the right gift. Here’s the ones that caught my eye from: The Personalized Pup … Continue reading

Hurt Paw = Sympathy Windfall

I mean to tell you, Murph has not minded his hurt paw very much. Another title for this blog could have easily been: “Murph Makes Out Like a Bandit.” That’s what’s happened ever since Murphy’s fan club got word of his demise. The Vet It all started when my friend Brenda sent Murph a care package. Inside was a note from her dog Mocha hoping Murph would get well soon, as well as a stuffed vet toy. When I thanked her, Brenda emailed me back and said, “I wasn’t really thinking. I guess he can’t really play right now.” “Oh … Continue reading

DIY Chew Toy

My brother’s two dogs are super chewers. We often have a hard time finding toys that will survive for more than a few minutes around their powerful jaws! Recently, I wondered if I could make a toy that would stand up to a power chewer. In theory, it isn’t hard to make a dog toy. Just take the fabric of your choosing, sew it into a simple shape like a rectangle or circle, stuff it with cotton batting, and close the hole. Easy, right? But when you’re dealing with power chewers, you have to be even more crafty. You need … Continue reading

Warning: Grapes and Raisins Deadly to Dogs Not an Urban Legend

Earlier this month a friend of mine (Lee, the dad of Mocha) sent me an email with this in the subject line: “If you have a dog…PLEASE READ!” That certainly caught my attention so I of course read it. The Warning The email was about a dog whose owners had to have him euthanized after he ate raisins, suffered raisin toxicity, and developed acute renal failure. The bulk of the email was rather technical and laced with veterinary jargon. Even so, the average dog owner could discern the gist: raisins and grapes are a big no-no treat for dogs. It … Continue reading

My Creepy Cat

Our friends Lee and Brenda have a nickname for Mr. Meow: the Pet Sematary cat. Why? Because sometimes he’s awfully creepy looking. Heck, sometimes he acts awfully creepy. Don’t get me wrong. He’s a beautiful cat. (And I’m not just saying that because I’m his mom and am biased. He is a good looking fella!) He’s a Nebelung, which are known for their gorgeous silvery fur. He’s also got a regal air about him. In fact, his good looks are why my mom abandoned her non-cat ways and allowed herself to fall in love with him. Well, that and because … Continue reading
