Ask a Pets Blogger: Mucus in Stool

First off, I’m sorry that this is such a gross question! I’ve noticed lately that there seems to be a lot of mucus in my dog’s stool. He doesn’t seem sick otherwise. Should I be worried? No need to apologize — owning pets often means you deal with a lot of gross things. (So says the woman with the dog who eats cat poop and barfs green grass in the living room.) Your problem is one that I’m actually familiar with. Moose (he who eats “kitty roca”) has experienced this in the past. Mucus in the stool can be a … Continue reading

Go Green with Your Pets

In honor of St. Patty’s Day yesterday, I looked at some ways to make your home a little more “green” — environmentally friendly — and how it can benefit your health. Now let’s look at a few ways to go green with your four-legged friends! Deal with pet waste naturally. Try flushable bags for picking up after your dogs on walks — flushing is best because it keeps bags and pet waste out of landfills and prevents soil and water contamination that comes with leaving doggy doo where it falls. If you don’t want to carry the waste to the … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for March 3-9

Aimee and I were busy beavers last week. In case you were too and missed any of our articles, here’s our Week in Review recap for your cheating (er, I mean catching up) pleasure… Monday, March 3 In Aimee’s first Diary of a Cat Care B&B entry for the week, she discussed her bulletin board she’s assumed responsibility for and asked for suggestions. Me and my crew presented “The Case of Who Cut the Cheese” after a stinky episode in our house Friday night. Aimee detailed the four most common worms in pets. Tuesday, March 4 Have you ever wondered … Continue reading

Spring is the Season of Green… Barf

I think my dogs Moose and Lally are jealous. With spending so much time interviewing writer friends lately, I haven’t been talking about them as much. Somebody’s jealous. Somebody came up with a GREAT way to get featured in a blog: barf a mysterious green liquid in the living room while I was in the shower. I always know something is up if one or both of the dogs is in the bathroom with me when I’m done in the shower. Usually, they avoid it like the plague. Running water? Soap? That could mean a dreaded bath! Today, Lally greeted … Continue reading

Help Me Entertain My Dogs!

Hard to believe that it’s been almost a year since I took my dogs on a cross-country road trip and resettled on the west coast. Time sure flies! A lot has happened in that year, too (and poor Moose was at the center of a lot of the adventures). Since I just renewed my lease, the apartment management offered me my choice of three thank yous: a carpet cleaning, a blind cleaning, or a ceiling fan. I knew the fan was out — Lally is (for some strange reason) scared to death of ceiling fans. She won’t even walk into … Continue reading

Your Pets, Your Vet, and the Truth

Your pets can’t talk. They can’t tell you or your veterinarian what hurts, or how they feel, or whether or not the treatments are helping. Pets depend on their owners to be detailed — and honest — when reporting symptoms and behavioral changes. Owners often have to serve as translators between the vet and the animal. The more detailed you can be when describing a problem, the more ammunition your vet has to fight what’s wrong. For example: I think my dog has a stomach ache. My dog vomited partially-digested food this morning after she ate. In the yard, she … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: The Worst Yet

Oh, I’m sure there will be many other injuries in my work at the cats only boarding facility, but today I got the worst one yet. It’s a three inch claw mark on the outside of my forearm — almost exactly where my arm hits the edge of the laptop (ow) or rests on the edge of the desk (also ow). I tried to take a picture of it so you could see that I’m not exaggerating… but my camera is out of batteries. Plus, thinking of all the people who were grossed out by Moose’s green barf earlier this … Continue reading
