Summer Grooming Tips

Today I saw this picture of a fake cat made out of the fur of the real cat it sat beside. The picture really drove it home, as if the hardwood floors I have all over my house hadn’t already: summer is here, and that means so is grooming season. I hate grooming. It’s always just such a trial in my house. But I’m cheap so I hate paying for it more, and because none of my animals do much more try to walk away a little and guilt me a lot for brushing them, I don’t have a great … Continue reading

Tips for Saving Money on Pet Care

A recent trip to Costco had me taking a good look at how much I spend on my pets compared to how much I spend on myself. I do tend to be more frugal for my own stuff, mostly because I can’t explain WHY to my pets. They don’t know high gas prices or cost of living — they just know it’s time for a treat. Owning pets doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are some tips to help you cut down on your pet spending (without denying your four-legged family members). Shop around for medical procedures. If your … Continue reading

Developing Cat Allergies in Adulthood

Here’s an even better reason to expose your children to pets at an early age: adults never exposed to them have a higher chance of developing allergies if they get pets. A team from the University Hospital of Verona (in Italy) studied more than 6,000 adults twice in nine years. It found that people who had never lived with cats before, and then adopted them in adulthood, doubled their chances of becoming allergic to the cat. The chances were even higher if the adults had other allergies or asthma. The process of becoming allergic to something when previously you weren’t … Continue reading

Fourth of July Pet Safety

On Friday one of the DJ’s for my local radio station mentioned upcoming Fourth of July celebrations, and she warned dog owners about fireworks. She said that she sees more fliers go up for missing dogs on July 5 than just about any other day of the year, all because of the fireworks noise. It’s something that never occurred to me, but it makes a lot of sense. Depending on where you live and how loud noise from fireworks might be in your yard, Independence Day, while fun for us humans, could prove frightening for our pets. If you keep … Continue reading

Taking Care of The Family Dog

The joys of lazy summer days. If you have pets, this time of year can be hard on them and your house. First there is all that hair. In order for them to lose their winter coat and be cooler in the summer, all that hair has to go somewhere, and it’s usually on your floors and furniture and clothes. While you will never get rid of pet hair without getting rid of the pet, there are some things you can do to reduce the hair in your home. Regular, frequent brushing is the best thing you can do. If … Continue reading

Is Your Dog a Beach Bum?

My dogs Moose and Lally have never been to the beach. I don’t trust Moose to romp off-leash in an unfenced area; Lally is not a fan of water as it is. My old dog Miko was another story. He loved the beach, and would chase waves as they ebbed and flowed — as long as he didn’t get his feet wet. It was adorable! If your dog loves the beach — and especially the water — you may have some extra grooming on your hands. If your pup stays dry, sand can more or less be brushed off the … Continue reading

Adopting A Cat: What Should You Know?

Adopting a cat can be a joyous occasion but it should not be done impulsively. Here are some tips put out by the ASPCA about what to do and not to do if you are choosing to adopt a cat from a local shelter. If some of these seem obvious, please forgive as most of this advice is directed to the person who may be adopting for the very first time. According to the ASPCA, my source for this material, there still seems to be a need to clarify some essentials. 1. Cats like all pets need good nutritious food … Continue reading
