Dog Days of Summer: Pets on Vacation

Pet owners face a unique situation when making our summer travel plans: we have to worry about our pets. Do we only go places where we can take our pets, or do we try to find care for them while we’re away? Website Pet Relocation released its third annual Summer Pet Travel Survey. They found that 70% of the people questioned plan to travel with their pets. If you want to take your animals along with you on vacation this summer, there are a few things you have to consider. Make sure you can bring your animal with you where … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: The Worst Yet

Oh, I’m sure there will be many other injuries in my work at the cats only boarding facility, but today I got the worst one yet. It’s a three inch claw mark on the outside of my forearm — almost exactly where my arm hits the edge of the laptop (ow) or rests on the edge of the desk (also ow). I tried to take a picture of it so you could see that I’m not exaggerating… but my camera is out of batteries. Plus, thinking of all the people who were grossed out by Moose’s green barf earlier this … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Accidental Injuries

There are some cats who leave an impression on your heart. Other cats leave an impression on you physically! In my work at the cats only boarding facility, I’ve met both types. For right now, I want to talk about the latter. One thing I’ve noticed is how very unpredictable cats are — especially when compared to dogs. I’ve lived with dogs for years. I’ve learned their little vocal cues and body language. Cats? Not so much. There are some who give warning with a hiss or a growl, and some who act out with very little (if any) warning … Continue reading

In case you missed any part of last week due to tending your resolutions, here’s what we wrote on: Monday, January 7 Why Does My Pet Play in His Water Bowl? If you have a cat like my Mr. Meow who definitely plays in his water bowl, Aimee provided insight into this mysterious phenomenon. Is Your Cat Stressed? Aimee listed some signs to look for that your cat may … Continue reading

Taking Care of a Fearful Cat

I’ve learned a lot about different cat personalities in my new part-time job. I’ve met playful cats, shy cats, serious cats, stressed cats, and everything in between. I’ve also run into my share of fearful cats. My favorite so far has been the little grey cat who hid underneath her bed for four days straight. Eventually, we coaxed her out from under the covers for some petting. After that, she seemed to be over her fear and ready for some human company. It took at least two days before she would even peek out from underneath the blanket to look … Continue reading

Taking Care of a Stressed Cat

At the cats only boarding facility, I’ve encountered lots of stressed cats at very different levels of stress — from the shy cat who hides behind her litter box to the panicked cat who lashes out at anyone who reaches into the cage. If your cat is showing a dramatic behavior change, your first step should be a visit to the veterinarian. Illness may be behind the behavior change — being sick can be a big stress on a cat! Rule out any physical causes first, and then you can work on any emotional causes. Some sources of stress could … Continue reading

Can You Really Get Pregnant on Vacation?

When we were trying to conceive our first baby, people often suggested we take a vacation. Personally, I thought they were out of their minds. What on earth did a vacation have to do with having a baby? As it turns out, it can make a difference. Stress has been shown to negatively affect fertility. The stress of daily life combined with trying to get pregnant can lower your chances of conception. Vacations offer stress reduction and a break from the daily grind. The travel industry has taken notice of studies that show vacations can work. Some are now offering … Continue reading

Tips and Tricks for a Healthy Mommy

Taking care of your children when you are sick can be more than challenging as a single parent. There’s no one there to take care of the kids while you are stuck in bed. You have no choice but to do it yourself. While getting sick is inevitable, here are some tips and tricks to keep it from happening quite as often. Start with cutting down on your stress load. The more stressed you are the more susceptible you are to illness. As a single parent this may seem nearly impossible since you are doing the work of two, but … Continue reading

Balancing Work and Family

As a single parent being a stay at home mom just isn’t an option for most of us. You have to have a way to provide for your children, because let’s face it, child support just doesn’t cover everything. Supporting children on your own can be overwhelming. Having to work means having to find quality child care for your children, which can be pricey. Many young mothers find themselves trapped because all of the money they make goes straight to daycare. It’s a vicious cycle that is hard to get out of without a strong support system to help you. … Continue reading

Breastfeeding is a Personal Choice

As a mother who has nursed three babies and edits an attachment parenting site, I am a big supporter of breastfeeding. But one thing I’ve noticed is that some people are crazy about it. There are a lot of breastfeeding moms and supporters out there that get kind of nasty to moms that don’t breastfeed. My personal experience was when my oldest quit nursing at seven months old. She just quit. No notice, no warning. Just one day she woke up and wanted nothing to do with my breast. Come to find out I was pregnant, but she didn’t care, … Continue reading
