What Does Your Local Humane Society or Shelter Need?

Do you know what kind of things your local humane society or shelter could use? I know shelters can always use food, money, and volunteers but on a recent trip to the Nashville Humane Society I was impressed to find flyers listing the things they needed. The Nashville Humane Society’s “Things We Need” List Small, medium and large Milk Bones Towels 13 gallon and 55 gallon trash bags Paper towels All sizes of collars 6 foot dog leashes Small, medium and large binder clips Rubber or plastic dog and cat toys Non-scoopable cat litter Purina or Meow Mix Kitten Chow … Continue reading

A Collection of Cat Toys

As impressive as the collage of cat toys to the left might be, it’s only a small representation of the entire collection of cat toys my cats claim. (Wayne’s decided if we’re looking for ways to cut money in case of a depression, cutting out my pet toy spending is a place to start. Sadly, he’s probably right.) But the purpose of this blog isn’t to show off my cats’ impressive collection of cat toys. Rather, it’s to discuss the names they know their toys by. (As I wrote in another article, I’m big on naming things.) See if you … Continue reading

Trust and Pet Ownership

It requires a lot of trust to own a pet. Have you ever noticed that? I didn’t understand how much trust is involved in pet ownership until all this stuff with Murphy’s paw happened. Now I realize how many people and institutions a pet owner must trust on a daily basis. Here’s a few to show you what I’m talking about. 1. Trusting Vets We trust our vets to administer the proper vaccinations annually for our pet’s health. We also trust that the vet knows how to do this and that the vaccines they’re administering are safe. When our pets … Continue reading

The Things We Do for Our Cats

If you’re the kind of doting cat mama that I am, you do more than just clean litter boxes and take them to the vet for their annual checkup, don’t you? When you go on vacations you fret about their wellbeing and miss them like mad. (Even though no doubt you’ve either placed them in a great cat B&B like the one Aimee works at or with a trustworthy pet sitter.) Heck, you might even plan it so they can come along. Their safety is always first and foremost on your mind. When you have to take them in the … Continue reading

The Wiffie

What the heck is a Wiffie you may be wondering? It happens to be Tabby’s favorite toy. “I thought the red and blue-and-yellow huts were her favorite toys?” those of you who have followed the continuing Tabby saga might be asking. True. They rank up there. But they’ve been out ranked by a seemingly boring white and green wiffle ball-like cat toy that Mr. Meow’s had since as far back as I can remember. He never paid it much mind, but Tabby? It’s like her security blanket. Nothing’s more playful than a young cat. ~-Thomas Fuller-~ It wasn’t her first … Continue reading

Getting Your Cat Into A Carrier

Okay cat parents: does your kitty love or hate the carrier? If your cat is a carrier-hater, try these tips and tricks to get your furry friend to play along. Give your cat a chance to get used to the carrier in his own time. Keep the carrier out with the door open so he can sniff it, mark it, and go inside to explore. If you do leave the carrier out, tie the door open so it won’t swing shut and frighten your cat. Try feeding your cat inside the carrier. Place the bowl all the way at the … Continue reading

Temperature-wise, it’s hot, hot, hot outside in most places right now, but it’s also a hot time to cash in on some cool savings for your pet. Take PetSmart for instance. The other day I received one of their circulars in the mail. They’re running a $5 Gift Days promotion. Apparently if I buy certain items, I’ll receive a $5 gift coupon back in the mail. However, I can save twice since some of the items that qualify for the $5 gift coupon also receive an instant discount at checkout if I use my PetPerks savings card. Groovy! (Like with … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Jun 25-Jul 1

Last week Aimee and I wrapped up June and ushered in July here in the Pets Blog. From Jacques Cousteau to chinchillas, I guess you could say we again covered the gamut. If you missed a day, reference the handy recap below to catch up with what we covered on: Monday, June 25 He took us to the depths of the ocean and paved the way for other animal activists. To him we pay tribute in In Memoriam: Jacques Cousteau. Providing a suitable living environment is important for your sensitive-skinned amphibian friends. Aimee looks at three types of tanks for … Continue reading

Target: A Surprising Place to Find Great Cat Toys

I was doing a little shopping in Target the other day for our everyday household items, including pet supplies. One of the things I desperately needed to pick up was either a replacement or a refill for Tabby’s cardboard Cat SuperScratcher+. Instead, I ended up marveling at the array of interactive cat toys they had. I always think Petsmart has a great selection of in-store pet toys (for both cats and dogs), but I went in there after Target and didn’t find half the neat toys Target had. (For cats at least. They still have a better selection of dog … Continue reading
