Meeting the Neighbor Dogs

I’ve blogged before about my neighbor’s dogs, the ones she lets roam free through the neighborhood. Sometimes I see them in our yard. Yesterday while I was working, I noticed one of them, the tan one, out the window. I went outside to greet it, as I always do whenever I see any of the neighborhood pets. They all, cats and dogs included, run away from me. This dog did the usual, but I thought of something: I called for it to come here. I didn’t think it was a dangerous dog, because our neighbor said he isn’t. He also … Continue reading

Dancing with Your Dog: Music and Costume Ideas

Ever since I interviewed Beth Terrell and she introduced me to the world of puppy dancing, I find myself thinking about music and costume ideas. I swear, once we get Murph’s paw healed, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if I enroll us in a puppy dancing class. There are so many opportunities to get creative! Music Ideas Beth may have been the catalyst that got me started thinking about dancing with my dog, but the Greatest American Dog’s Dancing with the Dogs episode was the one that got me thinking about the music. In that episode, the contestants had … Continue reading

Greatest American Dog: Dancing with the Dogs Episode

I finally had a chance to watch last week’s “Greatest American Dog.” As have the other episodes, it’s sparked some reflection on my behalf. (The gist of which is reflected in the subheads below.) The Good Again, I have yet to watch this show without crying. (Which isn’t entirely unexpected due to my problem.) However, this week it was the people, not the animals, who had me bawling. It started when Bill was talking about being so homesick and Star’s body language mirrored his sadness. It was heart wrenching to hear him say how much he missed his wife and … Continue reading

Do You Ever Feel Your Dog’s Not Living Up to His Full Potential?

I get both really inspired and really down on myself after I interview people like Beth Terrell or Joani Ascher. Inspired because they’re doing neat things with their dogs, like teaching them how to dance or grooming puppies to be Seeing Eye dogs. Down because Murph’s one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever had. I often wonder if I’m holding him back from living up to his full potential. At the beginning of this year I resolved to change that. I was determined to look into enrolling Murph and myself in a pet therapy program. Then my mom got sick … Continue reading

How Do You Train a Deaf Dog?

Yesterday I wrote about my friend who found out her dog is deaf. She had asked me if I knew anything about training a deaf dog, so I looked into it. I searched online for resources on the topic, and I also posted a request for help in the forums. The result? A wealth of information! Training Techniques TOUCH Both the replies in the forum and the Deaf Dog Education Action Fund emphasized how important physical contact, like pats and petting, is to training deaf dogs. Which makes sense. When one sense is out of commission the others have to … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for December 17-23

Merry Christmas Eve! Maybe you were like me and rushing around last week doing last minute Christmas errands, which left you little time for reading. (Or much else for that matter.) If that’s the case, and you want to catch up on what Aimee and I dished about here in the Pets Blog, look no further. You’ve found the handiest tool around: the Week in Review. Monday, December 17 Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Cleanliness Aimee’s new job made more good fodder for the Pets Blog. She explained what she spends the majority of her time doing at the … Continue reading

Teach Your Dog How to Dance

If your dog likes to jump up, you may find it easy to teach your dog how to dance! I’m currently working on this trick with my Lally — she is a boxer mix who lives up to the “boxer” part of her heritage. When someone comes to the door, she likes to jump up and “box” them in greeting. I’d love it if she only did that sort of thing on command! The advantage of dancing on command is that it becomes a replacement behavior for jumping up. Many dogs who learn to dance don’t end up putting as … Continue reading

Teach Your Dog How to Come

Sounds easy, right? Teaching your dog how to come on command is an easy trick that will be very useful for you. A well-trained dog will stop ANYTHING and come to you when you call. One note: when you are first teaching this trick, don’t tell your dog to come to you for an unpleasant reason. This will teach him to associate the command with something bad and can make him hesitant to come to you at all. Keep things positive when you are first teaching this trick! Stand a short distance away from your dog with a special treat … Continue reading

Summer Reading Series: Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet

What do Three Billy Goats Gruff and Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet have in common? Believe it or not; an important lesson in parenting. Allow me to explain. A few months ago, my daughter’s second grade class decided to put on a play. Yup. Three Billy Goats Gruff. Tryouts were held and my seven-year-old did her best to score the part she had her heart set on: Baby Goat. Fortunately, I had enough time to emotionally prepare her in case she didn’t get the coveted role. “That’s okay, Mommy,” she reasoned “if I don’t get to be the Baby … Continue reading

Catalog Gifts for Cats and the People Who Love Them

Yesterday I listed some gifts for dogs and the people who love from a couple different catalogs. Today I’m going to do the same things for cat people. From Femail Creations Catffeinated Mug: If you’ve got any cat lovers who also happen to be coffee lovers on your holiday shopping list, they might get a big jolt out of this cup. $14. You Can’t Own a Cat decoration: This caught my eye because it looks like something from times gone by. (Like something from the turn of the 20th century perhaps.) But then I looked closer and saw the quote: … Continue reading
