Sympathy Cards for a Lost Pet

It feels like I’ve been signing a lot of sympathy cards at the cats-only boarding facility lately. As much as I hate to think about it, our pets just don’t live as long as we’d like them to. It’s a sad coincidence that we’ve had several guests pass away in relatively quick succession. Sometimes, I don’t know what to say. I do my best to find something to love about each and every cat that comes through our doors. When I’m writing out the card, I try to remember some special moment I shared with the pet — some fond … Continue reading

Pet Tattoos

I was paging through a recent edition of BARK magazine and couldn’t help but notice a feature article about pet tattoos. Not tattoos FOR pets — people who get tattoos of their pets. It seems that there are lots of people out there choosing to get a tattoo to memorialize a lost pet, or just express love for a current pet. The article had pictures of a variety of styles, from full color portrait to cartoonish puppies playing. There was even a cute one of a stick-figure human with a ponytail chasing after a stick-figure dog. I also liked one … Continue reading

Reusing a Lost Pet’s Stuff

This is just the first of a few blogs I’m planning about reusing the stuff that belonged to another pet. Valorie had asked me about preparing a tank to house a new type of aquarium pet, and I’ll get to that shortly — promise! (That conversation is also what led to the hysterical story of the Turtles in The Hood.) But the question got me thinking about reusing a pet’s stuff. I was devastated when my dog Miko passed away in September, 2003. I gave away what was left of his food and treats that same day — I couldn’t … Continue reading

Memorializing Your Pet Becomes Big Business

The practice of memorializing pets dates back thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians entombed cats alongside people in the pyramids. Ancient cultures in South America had special tombs for their dogs. Evidence goes back as far as ten thousand years to support pet burials and memorials. These days, we don’t necessarily have access to pyramids and fancy tombs for our friends at the Rainbow Bridge. That doesn’t mean you can’t memorialize your pet! A recent survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association found that one in ten dog and cat owners would buy an urn for their pet — … Continue reading

Puppies Successfully Cloned… For a Price

A story about an American woman who paid fifty thousand dollars to have her dog cloned made headlines this week. The story in short, if you missed it: she lost her dog Booger two years ago. Once dog cloning became available, she sold her home to finance the project to clone her lost pup. About a week ago, two surrogate mothers gave birth to five pit bull puppies — all clones of Booger. I have mixed feelings about this, to be honest. It’s a lot of money to spend, for one thing. That money could have helped a lot of … Continue reading
