Dolphin Intelligence Sparks New Ethics Debate

A unit in my college environmental ethics class studied the different ethics systems we follow in order to determine how we treat others. It focused on sentient verses non-sentient: the idea that some life, although not as intelligent as humanity, is still aware of itself (animal) and that other, while still alive, has no self-awareness (plant). The question of sentience was one factor used to determine what level of ethical treatment was appropriate for different members of the environment. Up until now humans for the most part have lumped all animals into one category and treated them the same: humanely, … Continue reading

Managing Smart Dogs

Smart is often a selling point for dogs. There are certain breeds, especially those known for herding, that are generally considered the cream of the clever canine crop. Thus if you want an intelligent dog it might not be too hard to seek one out, but there are some things you need to know before adopting a brainy companion. Pet site ZooToo has some tips. The most important thing to consider first is that smart doesn’t necessarily mean easy. We think that it will; we think how nice it will be to have a dog that can fetch slippers and … Continue reading

Female Dogs Might Think Differently from Male Dogs

Maybe I’ll learn by osmosis A recent article on MSNBC posited that perhaps female dogs are more intelligent than male dogs. Or at least, that’s what the sensationalist headline might lead readers to think. What’s really going on is that a study from the University of Vienna may have found evidence that male and female dogs think in slightly different ways. The study, led by cognitive biologist Corsin Muller, tested domesticated dogs for their comprehension of “object permanence.” Object permanence is a physical law stating that when an object disappears from view, that doesn’t mean that it’s ceased to exist … Continue reading

Who’s the Dumb One? You or Your Dog?

I have a friend who’s convinced her dog’s the dumbest dog in the world. She tells the dog that regularly and shakes her head in dismay over “dumb” things he does. I ask her all the time for examples of his dumbness because I have yet to see him do anything dumb. She never really gives specifics, though. She just kind of skirts my questions and reaffirms that he’s dumb. I guess she expects I should just take her word for it. Now don’t get me wrong. I happen to like this friend very much, which is why she’ll remain … Continue reading

The Search for the Greatest American Dog

The other night I saw a preview for a new show that’ll premier on CBS this summer called “The Greatest American Dog.” From what I can tell it’s an American Idol-like contest for dogs. Except not geared so much to their singing talent as their brain ability. The Premise It looks like producers scoured the dog-loving free world for any and all kinds of talented dogs. They picked 12 to live together in a house and compete for “Greatest American Dog” honors. I’m still not sure if they’re going to do an American Idol like start to the series where … Continue reading

The Smartest Species

I saw a headline on MSN about the smartest animal species… of course I had to click that link! The article compared signs of human intelligence — like making tools, solving problems, self-awareness, and more — with animal behaviors. Humans are the top of the list of the smartest species (at least as far as we know). Next on the list of smartest animals came chimpanzees. Humans and chimps share a lot of the same genomes — and chimp behavior demonstrates that some of that is shared intelligence. Among documented intelligent behaviors in chimps are: Making and using tools Hunting … Continue reading

Murph Scores 100 on his Pooch IQ Test

I finally had a chance to administer the two remaining exercises from the Pooch IQ test kit I got. Which means I was finally able to tally Murph’s scores! Scoring All the tests ended with a letter answer to pick from. Kind of a multiple choice thing, but the answer we picked depended on how Murph performed during that exercise. After we took each test we went to the score sheet at the back of the book. All of the exercises attributed different point values to each letter answer. We had to find the exercise number and the letter answer, … Continue reading

Murph’s Progress with the PoochIQ Test

Yesterday morning Murph and I put the PoochIQ.com dog IQ test kit I received to the test. Part of it anyway. We haven’t completed the whole test yet, but we’re having a lot of fun working our way through it. So often the word “test” invokes dread and a dragging of the feet, doesn’t it? But not in this case. The “tests” are fun. More like games for your dog if you approach it with a spirit of fun, enthusiasm, and playfulness instead of a purely clinical air. Murph and I certainly had fun for the seven questions we completed. … Continue reading

Surprise! My PoochIQ.com Test Kit Arrived Today!

A little over a week ago I got an email from an unspecified representative with a company called PoochIQ.com. They felt their product might make interesting fodder for the Pets Blog. They felt right! They offered to send me a complimentary test kit to sample on my Murphy. “Why not?” I figured. So I wrote them back and gave them my address. I must confess, I never bothered to click on their website until I was preparing to write this article today. I meant to beforehand, like earlier this week, but things got slightly chaotic. Aside from the storms, I … Continue reading
