The American Curl: The Feline Peter Pan

The American CurlThe American Curl Cat, so called because of its truly unique ears that curl back from its head in a graceful arc, is hands down, the "Peter Pan" of the feline world. Dubbed thusly because they retain their kitten-like personalities throughout their lives, this breed began in California in 1981 with a longhaired female black cat with funny ears named "Shulamith. All legitimate pedigrees can trace their lineage back to her. The American Curl's ears are lynx-like with long tufts fanning outward, and when selective breeding began in 1983, it was discovered that the ear-curling gene is autosomal dominant, which means it will appear in any cat with even one trace of the gene. Within three to five days after birth, the ears start to curl back, maintaining a tight rosebud position. They unfurl gradually until they are permanently set, which occurs at about sixteen weeks of age.

The tail of the American Curl is a plush and luxurious plume, and these cats come in both longhair and shorthair varieties. Equally indicative of the breed is the cat's medium-sized body, silky, flat coat and walnut-shaped eyes. They are lovable, affectionate and gentle cats, and they adjust well to other pets, and children. They are very devoted, almost dog-like in fact, to their owners and are always trying to be a part of the action. Not overly talkative, their meows and purrs sound more like trills and coos.

The founder of the American Curl had this to say about these amazing cats: "They are not just 'decorator' cats. You might say they are 'designer' cats, perhaps even signed masterpieces of a humor-loving Creator".
